It's cool to find out what people do for others and I would like to know what you do.

I'll start it off:

I am the Pricing Chair (department manager) for records and musical instruments at the Happy Dragon in Los Gatos, CA. Happy Dragon is a volunteer run resale store that contributes tons of money to EMQ Children & Family Services, a nonprofit organization that provides support to children with severe depression and emotional problems, and their families. Therapy, foster services, psychiatry, addiction prevention and school-based day treatment are among the services provided by the program.

So tell me about your charitable work!

Besides being a teacher, a former Peace Corps and Americorps vol., I take part in Habitat For Humanity when I can. I volunteer at a local food bank and soup kitchen when I can, and try to get my students to do their community service there. I help out at Meals On Wheels, bringing meals to elderly or in-bound folks. Sometimes visit one of the local animal shelters, walking or bathing or just cuddling dogs & cats. There is more but this is most recent.

Oh wait. I just remembered! I bought 4 boxes of thin mint girl scout cookies. No need to thank me ... just doing my part.

Those really are the best cookies. Me, I volunteer my time for an online music forum.

While I don't do all that much, I donate Turkeys to the food bank every Christmas and do what I can to donate food during the year. Long story short: A freind of mine was an up and coming Programmer for a software firm here in T.O.. After a while he got sick and found out he was suffering from a herat defect (genetic) and needed a transplant. He found out he had no income replacement benefits from work and soon found himself living on a $680 per month disability cheque. His wife left him and eventually, rather than be homeless, moved back in with his mom in smalltown Ontario, far away from the latest in Cadiac technology. Sadly he died while he was on the transplant list. It made me realize it doesn't take much to go from living in the cool Condo at Bathurst and Front Street, to living on the street through no fault of your own.
Just something to think about.

I donate monthly to a shelter for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence.

I donate to the Human Fund and Kramerica Inc.

Every Christmas, I make sure that a couple of kids have a Christmas. I have been doing this for many years and will continue.

Just so we're clear, I'm not talking about my kids.

I give blood as often as I am allowed.
My family also makes Thanksgiving baskets for the needy in the community.
I also give to Make a Wish foundation.

I had rabies shots years ago and they told me that I couldn't donate blood for a number of years. Anyone know how long before I can donate blood again?


Nevermind, I'm now eligible again.

Doug, must be synchronicity that you brought this up! I'm starting a charitable project in Orange County called "Play It Forward" where I'm looking to find talented high school students in bands (or solo) with original material and give them a chance to be recorded professionally and compiled on a CD. I then plan on putting on a live show with local bands as well as some of the high school musicians in order to raise money for a music scholarship + other giveaways. I'm looking for talent across multiple genres: rock, pop, hip hop, electronic/DJ, jazz.

I welcome any input or assistance from anyone in the L.A. or O.C. area here on the board. I hope to put the event on in late June or early July (not necessarily the 4th).

I'll post a more informative thread shortly. I've got lots of ideas but I welcome other suggestions.
