MJ is Canada's governor general - basically representing the Queen as the head of state (how fucking backward is that?). Anyway, I didn't have much respect for her until this story broke today.

It may have meant to be a sign of solidarity with Canada's Inuit people or possibly a slap in the face of the European Union after it recently voted to ban seal products.

Whatever her motivation, Governor General Michaelle Jean is certainly being talked about this morning after she gutted a freshly slaughtered seal, cut out the heart, took off a slice and ate it raw. It was it was definitely graphic, even stomach churning, but was it justified? Jean says yes.

On the Governor General's final official visit to the Arctic, she used a traditional blade to repeatedly cut into a freshly slaughtered seal, then turned to the woman beside her and asked her, "Could I try the heart"? And then she did.

When it was over, the Governor General wiped her bloody fingers with a tissue, saying it is difficult to believe anyone would characterize the traditional hunting practices as inhumane.

The story is getting a lot of attention in Toronto and opinions are varied.

One man told 680News, "It doesn't sit comfortably with me, it's not something I would do. However I can see how symbolic it is."

Another man said, "She represents all of Canada so this could look like something the whole country supports."

According to Jean, it was meant to show support for Canada's seal hunters. Michaelle Jean is the Queen's representative in this country, but her statement may not go over so well in Europe.

It was earlier this month that the European Union called the seal hunt "inherently inhumane", voting to ban seal products. The ban is expected to take effect in October.

Actually glok, that's what makes this so hilarious...she is like the anti-Palin. I NEVER would have expected it from her! It'd be like Obama running over a possum and stopping to eat fresh roadkill.

The Inuit are a primitive people and this shows in their mythology. It's only logical to seek to maintain a dialogue with a country's indiginous population. The participation of cultural practice typically makes for good relations. I don't know.....are these seals any more endangered than the cows, pigs, lambs and chicken we eat everyday?

The latter are domesticated into massive populations (2 billion cows, 1 billion pigs, etc). The former are wild animals whose populations were decimated to the low million range before rebounding somewhat in the past 20 years. Beyond that, it seems hypocritical to call that hunting any more inhumane than the industrialized slaughter of domesticated animals by those who support pseudo-deified monarchies. Now, a representative of a pseudo-deified monarchy who eats freshly-slaughtered seal for purposes of titillation? That's fucking primitive! [:o)]

Holy shiznizzle dude, that MUST be some high potency herb you're getting [:D] Seriously though...well phrased, even if the "purposes" can be said to be subjectively interpreted. It's all good. Remember what Obi-Wan said.

You almost have to pity the Canadians for being subject to the moral high ground of the European Union. I say they go after the Mongolians for eating goat testicles and the Aborigines for eating Kangaroo. Next up, ban bull-fighting, fox hunting, overfishing, and fur farms.
