Shatner has always been too hip for the room. Even back in the 70's. His long out-of-print "William Shatner Live" album had his hilarious R-rated "preview" of the then upcoming Star Trek: the Motion Picture.

It took time for the rest of society to catch up with Bill.[:D]

Shatner was the Man even before his Trek days. In Incubus, he read all his lines in esperanto. Fuckin' esperanto.
