this is probably a stupid question, but on my new pc when I try to copy cd to my computer through Windows Media Player, it's not giving me MP3 option, only gives Windows Media Audio (and WMA Lossless). Is that the same thing, or I need MP3 format? What's the difference?

Mine has this option. Go to Tools-> Options-> Rip Music. About half way down the window under the heading of Rip Settings there is a drop down menu where you can select MP3 as your ripping preference. Most players will play either format, MP3 or WMA.

If you're running XP, go to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Properties -> Hardware -> Audio Codecs -> Properties button -> Properties tab.

There should be an MPG Layer 3 Codec on the list. Right click, then Properties. Make sure that it hasn't been disabled.

In any case, do yourself a favour and get Exact Audio Copy + LAME.EXE to rip CD to MP3s.

thank you for trying to help you guys
just checked it. That codec hasn't been disabled.
It plays mp3 fine, but when I try to copy, it does not give me option of mp3.

so I downloaded something called CD-ex

it was using by default Lame mp3 encoder, though there were some otehr choices from dropdown box. Should I have picked another, or is Lame good

LAME is (supposedly) the best (soundwise) MP3 out there.

Exact Audio Copy is better than CDEx, if you care about accuracy .
