So how are we gonna say it? [:p]

On an unrelated note, anybody remember this?

Twenty ten is the correct way. Think about it. It's really quite simple. How have we said the year in every other decade other than this last one? Did we say "nineteen eighty" and "nineteen ninety three" or "one thousand, nine hundred and eighty" and "one thousand, nine hundred and ninety three"? We've never put a "thousand" into it until we were forced to for 9 years. I swear ... it's like people have forgotten how to think.

But then the thought of the use of term "thousand" with respect to how we say years has been around for eons. We (or at least I) think of the movie "2001 A Space Oddysey" as two thousand one, not as twenty 01, as I imagine most do. So it's just been around a long time. Even in biblical terms, or historical terms, the B.C. period if referred to as 2,000 BC, as opposed to 20 Hundred BC, etc....

I don't really care what they call it, I have been saying two thousand ten just out of habit I guess, though I have been hearing twenty-ten alot more recently. Either way is ok by me. Wonder what they will make kids do in school.

Actually, you're quite right Motors. I voted the other way, being so used to saying "two thousand one", etc. [8)]

At any rate, I hope that the change in syntax will be accompanied by a change in direction for the world in the new year. I'm mostly talking about the economy and to at least some extent, attitudes towards the environment. I'm sure we all have things we see as needing change. The beginning of a new year is always a time of optimism.

Your 2001 example and your 2000 bc example both start with 20 and are not followed by double digits numbers, which is similar to what I was addressing when I said "we've never put a "thousand" into it until we were forced to for 9 years". I doubt anyone would say "two thousand and forty six bc" instead of the much simpler "twenty forty six bc" but I'm not sure. Either way, when I used my examples, I was mostly referring to years all of us on the board have been alive. [:D]

Having lived in the time of Jesus, i was used to the other way. Heck, here i thought this was going to be easy compared to Y2K. We were talking about Y2K today and how crazy it was with the hours we had to put in to ensure everything was okay at the stroke of midnight. They made us be at work 3 hours prior to midnight and stay until about 2am, all to discover the world and time and machines still functioned.

By the end of the decade, most Americans will say Veinte-Diecinueve.
