I take the train to work and I listen to my music on my portable cd player and people look at me like I’m holding some ancient artifact. It’s hard to believe that hardly anyone uses these anymore. Every time I look around, everyone is either listening to an MP3 Player or their cell phone. I sometimes feel like I’m Fred Flintstone. Oh well, at least I have MEGABASS.

<p align="justify">I had an old Sony Discman that I got back in 98 that lasted only 2 years, then I bought some other random portable cd player that also lasted 2 years. In 2002, ma' bought me another Sony Discman with the MEGABASS(!) for my birthday. Hahaha. That shit lasted me until just recently. It still worked, but I took it to the local electronics recycler/dumpster. I may buy another portable cd player just because I have a lot of mix cds I make. However, I'm looking into getting a good mp3 player - barebones that I can only drag the files into it without having to go through some bullshit program such as ichunes (I have had one of those stupid ipods for years, but I never used it because it doesn't work the way I want it to work)[}:)]

If you're looking at a flash memory based one, you may want to think about getting one with an (Micro)SD card slot.

I grew up on the portable CD Players back in the 80's and 90's "so Ipods and the like are somewhat foreign on my planet". Actually I once owned an IPod and enjoyed it for about six months. But you know...it just didn't have the same feeling I get when I pop in my favorite CDs or mixed CDs I created and give them a spin. Some of my Co Workers act like they've never seen a portable CD Player in their life. Others will say something like...Hey! I used to have one of those things!

Seriously who can be assed carrying something that size and a bunch of cd's around the place?!.... I couldn't be assed even when mp3 wasn't an option!! [:D]

I will go to my grave refusing to get music from shITunes.Lousy compressed files that sound hissy.Strange how we have actually started going backwards in sound quality.

Its forgoing (some) quality for portability.

Maybe we will get a highly compressed format that is not as lossy and becomes popular in the future!

In the mean time,I personally am happy with lossy audio and being able to listen to a massive variety of songs as the trade-off.

Not me,the reason I gave up on Viynl and tapes was for cd quality.And plus I like my muisc collection to actually exist.One pc crash and the whole lot goes forever.

I would get something that played lossless of flac files though.Hardly any mp3 player or ipod will play them.

CD quality better than vinyl? Good grief. With that statement I am sure you would not be able to determine any sound difference at all with your mp3 collection that you could easily back up on a external hard drive that costs next to nothing.

<p align="justify">I was thinkin the same thing. Vinyl is still optimal for audiophiles. Hell, there are reel-to-reel and tapes that sound waaaaay better than cd. I've bought some shitty cds before, so thinking about those as mp3s isn't that far of a stretch. I rip everything as 320kbps rather than flac or wav for the possibility of owning a mp3 player I like. I just gave away my dusty/unused ipod to my little brother[}:)]

I was an mp3 player holdout for quite a long time. I was happy with my portable CD player. 2 years ago or so, I got a small little mp3 player (some little Memorex thing) and it suits me fine. But you're right--it's so odd to see a CD player anymore. I saw a kid using one the other day and it really stood out, to me.

Some of the previous generation players, including Ipods, can be loaded with Rockbox firmware, which does support FLAC.

I wouldn't say all vinyl sound better than CDs. I have lots of pretty shitty flexible vinyls pressed in Canada that I'm sure would lose out to a CD.
