While searching for a song title "Hearts of Space" from 5th element movie I came across this website that plays commercial free format & you can even acess the database from way back for streaming.

Could this be the online identity of the New Age radio show "Music From The Heart Of Space" that aired on public radio in the 80's and 90's?

HOS is interesting. I could do without the Rod Serling intros. The music seems ok, from what I've sampled, a bit too on the new-age side for my liking. But, given the right mood, I could bliss out to that station for a while.

I like some slowcore/ambient/drone bands such as <a href="http://www.myspace.com/starsofthelid" target="sotl">Stars of the Lid</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nah-Fern-Gas/dp/B0018LMKGW" target="gas">Gas</a>, <a href="http://brainwashed.com/labradford/" target="labr">Labradford</a>, <a href="http://www.sunblind.net/" target="_th">Tim Hecker</a>, <a href="http://brainwashed.com/wc/" target="wc">Windy & Carl</a>, Brian Eno, <a href="http://www.stevereich.com/" target="sr">Steve Reich</a> and <a href="http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13996-between-buildings-and-trees/" target="_new">Andrew Thomas</a>, <a href="http://www.maxrichter.com/en/index.php" target="_new">Max Richter</a> (just heard one of his popular pieces in Shutter Island-- at this point some of his work is becoming cliche), <a href="http://www.johannjohannsson.com/" target="jj">Jóhann Jóhannsson</a> (touring the US this Spring!) and a few other <a href="http://www.kranky.net/" target="_krank">Kranky</a> artists. The new Andrew Thomas release linked above is pretty nice if you want to get an idea of the genre.

Yes, this is Hearts of Space the radio show. I like a lot of the HOS label stuff, but certainly a fair share veers into new agey elevator music territory. I'm into the space/drone/tribal/ambient stuff which ventures into the darker side -- not so light and fluffy. Two "desert island discs" from HOS for me that are brilliant bar none and sonically all over the map:

Dunno why, but anything new-agey with those deep, Burundi jungle drums is a real turn off. I just can't get into it.

In the jazz genre, there are a few artists that skirt the new-age/ambient space. In particular:

I never cared much for this kind of thing but I have friends who swear by it. The radio show was pretty popular in it's day. So popular in fact that it was parodied on Mystery Science Theater 3000 as "Music From Some Guys In Space". [8D]
