While Ontarians continue to work, the rest of Canada is taking today to remember those who proudly served (or continue to serve) our country. May all those still in harm's way in Afghanistan return safely.

Given the relatively small size of our overall population and armed forces, we've certainly taken our fair share of casualities in Afghanistan.

It's one thing to see their names listed...but even more moving when their pictures are posted as well. I believe in this mission and I'm proud of these Canadians. They should be honoured.

I was actually going to say how old they all were. Past wars had typically been fought basically with the 'young and stupid'. This is a new demographic with likely societal impact more widespread - disrupted jobs and families, etc. I'm not saying those younger live were less valued in any way - they dynamics are just very different now.

It is interesting. Here in Vancouver, all of the Cadet corps are dominated by Asian kids. And when I say dominated, I mean 99.9%. Maybe it takes until the third generation of being in a new country before people choose to get involved. It would be interesting to know if the whiteness is slowly starting to change.

I also noticed that the vast majority of those who have been killed are from either Ontario or the Atlantic provinces.

When those killed in battle are repatriated, they travel on a set route known locally as the Highway Of Heroes. People have taken to lining the route as a grass roots gesture of thanks to those who've made the ultimate sacrifice.

Although this route passes through many large ethnic communities in the GTA (the world's largest Sri Lankan community outside of Sri Lanka comes to mind), the people who take time to salute the returning dead are almost to a person, white. You would think those who have chosen to make Canada their home would have a bit more appreciation for such sacrifices, but their plates are probably full with fund raising for worthy organizations like the Tamil Tigers.

A little unknown fact is the Americans shown during the "D" day were actully Canadaians as the ship carring the American films was sunk so there was no film for the cameras & they borrowed the Canadians footage till film help arrived!
