This is quite possibly the most awesome thing in years. I may have to dye my hair purple in honor of the arrival of DEV2.0!

Click on the link for music samples and downloadable videos. There are a lot of good New Wave cover bands around, but this is something totally radical! Do you think they'd be available to book for a New Wave-themed Bat Mitzvah?

I'm of two minds about this.

One, the idea of Devo colluting with a soulless corporate behemoth like Disney is abhorrent. It pretty much goes against all the buzzwords they were tossing about. Very anti-Devo.

On the other hand, look at it this way: Stop 99% of people on the street, and say the word Devo, and the first thing that comes to mind is "Whip It". And half of those people probably can't name the band--just "the guys with flowerpots on the heads." So, they have a choice. They can either just let their music fade away, and be relegated to the cultural memory as guys wearing flowerpots and boiler suits--or they can try to get the kids to listen to their music by collaborating with the enemy. Remember Timbuk 3? Me neither. (Pause for laughter.) That band was a one-hit wonder, too. Pat McDonald, being a noble free-spirit, refuses to sell out--refuses to compromise by selling "I Gotta Wear Shades" to the ray-ban corporation. Pat lives in a motel, and in ten--twenty years no one will remember his crappy novelty song. The members of Devo probably don't want to go out like that, I assume. So the issue of DEV2.O is not in black and white terms; I can hate the idea of them doing it, yet can appreciate why they do it.

I'm also of 2 minds about this:

Motherbau doesn't need the $$$ as his film music and art are both keeping his bank balance in the black. As for the other members of the band, I dunno. I don't think the cash was the only reason for doing this. It's not 1977, or 1982 anymore, and the world has changed. My take is that the members of DEVO tried to think of the most rediculous scenario for the new millenium DEVO and this is what they came up with. I think that selling the idea to Disney was more of a subversive statement than a willingness to collude with the enemy.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean that I as a DEVO fan have to accept this, like this, or support this. I was tempted to buy the cd but I just couldn't allow myself to spend what little expendable cash I have on something so... I don't know. I've got all the original DEVO records, I really don't need to hear a 12 year old girl mutate a song about masturbation into a song about eating snacks.

The Devo fanatic in me wants to buy into Ollie's explanation, but like Love+1, I smell bullshit from the Devo guys. Oh well, I guess everyone sells out eventually...

I think it's just a way to do something for kids (I imagine some of the members of Devo are parents and probably had to endure The Wiggles a million times over)

...AND to make money. Mark Mothersbaugh composed the music for the "Rugrats" cartoon on Nickelodeon so he must know from experience how well these sorts of projects can sell.

I'd get it if I had kids...but I don't.[8D]

You know it. There wasn't a punk/new-wave band alive that played the clubs, toured bars and got gobbed upon just to stay on small labels and earn shite money. I can only think of one exception: Crass. Crass, however, sucked ass, made the worst punk music imaginable, and lived in a hippie commune.

The whole point was to sell out--any artist who says he signed to Virgin or EMI just to increase his listener base is a liar. There is very rarely any noble, artistic motive behind pimping yourself out to a major label.

Unfortunately, major labels are prone to ripping artists off, which partly explains the DEV2.O thing, I think.

Jerry Casale himself from DEVO did production and worked on the videos.

I heard an interview where he talked about the subversive nature of working with Disney. You know what, there are going to be a lot of young people that are going to get into the original DEVO recordings because of this cheesy kids band.

I finally "aquired" a copy of the disc. First off, I don't see why everyone says it's aimed at kids. Aside from a 13 year old girl doing vocals and the changing of lyrics to make them more "kid friendly" I don't really see it. Kids today don't even know who DEVO was, and they're more interested in Fall Out Boy and Fifty Cent.

The lyric changes are insipid, especially Uncontrollable Urge. While I completely understand that having a young girl sing a song about masturbation would be just plain wrong, having the song now be about a snack attack is silly.

I stand by my original ascertation; that DEVO is using Disney and laughing all the way to the bank.

On a side note, hasa anyone read the DEVO book? I've been tempted to get it for awhile now.

Think of it this way, they've had 20+ years to formulate the plan. What better way to prove Devolution is real by pulling one over on DisneyCorp? Granted, the side effect(s) like money and renewed fame aren't something they're going to turn down, but I like to think that there's still hope for a big DEVO masterplan.
