Apparently these guys were big winners at the MTV awards last night. Any thoughts? They're listed as Pop Punk in AMG.

It would have been nice to see a punk/NW band mentioned as an influence.

I put them in that same bastardized nu-kid-faux-punk category as Fallout Boy and Good Charlotte (as if). It's lowest common denominator drek...male skater-boy versions of Avril Lavigne. And it's horrifyingly unshocking how MTV and the mainstream migrates to this crap over some very good "post-punk" styled bands in the lesser-known tiers.

My favorite review from Popmatters...

"...when I finally received the CD and ripped off the plastic wrapper, there was an unmistakable smell emanating from the packaging. You know that smell when emo-laced dance-pop is embodied by human flesh and bones? And then that body dies in some way; the method of death is not important as long as all the limbs remain intact. I actually like them, to compare them to Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte would be mistaken In my opinion[:)] Give it a listen!

Commercial!!! Gothy poppy commercial stuff... not original at all. But better than Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte indeed.

So Commercial always means bad? Not one kid in the band is old enough to drink. I find them witty and intelligent (ooh, and they're cute to boot[;)]) Gothy????????? Definitely poppy! I think they have a different twist than the current crop of Emo bands out there. Sure, they don't sound like every other Joy Division ripoff band out there but c'mon. I swear, nothing drives me more crazy than just disliking something because it's "popular". Agreed, oftentimes that does equate to dreck but not always.

Maybe this will turn into my own personal Colourfield V & P thread. Then again, maybe...in the words of d. Boon "The Roar of the Masses...".


What the heck do I know. (Am I really supporting a TRL band that my kids love?) I just find it funny radio bleeps "God" from their song. Any band that only writes sins and not tragedies is good in my book!

They are commercial cos they are the result of pro tools use and 0 creative in having an aesthetcis of their own... they look really similar to My Chemical Romance and bands like that.
Whooooaaa! I'm being insulted for liking Interpol and Editors... I've already stated my opinion on the fact that I don't see any of the bands as I see Joy Division... (Joy Division is Joy Division... there was only one and there will be no other band like it).

Ditto,ditto,ditto,ditto on Blir's comment, I'm so sick of this power pop punk stuff,it's like the takeover of alternative radio by rap metal in the 90's. It eliminated a lot of deserving music off many playlists.
I don't mean to sound snotty ,I like a well written pop song
as well as arty stuff,but enough is enough.I blame Blink 182 for the onslaught of this genre and Green Day partially,although they seem to have a toe in the waters of 70's punk.
I have one exception,I'm partial to The Living End, if you consider them as part of this genre.

I wouldn't even use the phrase "pop-punk" to describe Good Charlotte or Fallout Boy. They're just pop bands with a punky look. In other words, POSEURS. (I think of pop-punk as being bands like the Dickies or the Buzzcocks, or more recently, Screeching Weasel and Pansy Division.) Panic! at the Disco are at least visually interesting, but I don't see myself picking up their CD. My twelve-year-old thinks they're cool, though.

Anyon here this band "Rock Kills Kid"? Don't know if they fit in this category but they have a couple of really cool songs. I think one is called "Paralyzed".

The thing is that I can think of 1,000,000 bands that sound better than Panic!at the disco and haven't had their big hour yet.
Take Action Action or White Rose Movement... great bands with a cool aesthetics and is everyone talking about them??? No, well... I think some people in this site have mentioned WRM.

Duh???!!! Yeah, I have [:p]. None of them are actually "joydivisionesque" as Stellastarr or Interpol may be.
We are not gonna get into an arguement but I can think of plenty more bands better than Panic! (and not so well known) and not at all Joy Divisionesque.

My only point is (and it's not just directed at you and not necessarily just about this thread, I even maybe do it myself sometimes) is we criticize "popular" bands because we are "way too cool" to like them, we like our little band that no one else has heard of. We overlook the fact that maybe our favorites, aren't quite as original as we thought. I do like Panic! At The Disco, I find them closer to the Killers on the musical scale than Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte but how dare I have the nerve to say anything bad about The Killers, who most people here like with their "original" 80's sound.
We can all act like The Editors or Interpol or Bloc Party or Franz Ferdinand or Hot Hot Heat or She Wants Revenge or whoever the heck else you want to throw in there are "original" and they are good because the masses haven't caught on (yet). Maybe it's because the record label they chose to sign to didn't push the record. Maybe they are not as savvy at marketing themselves.

After all,you know what they say, the only difference between martyrdom and suicide is press coverage!

Actually, I don't think that all the bands you've mentioned may be "original".
I'm talking about sound quality here.
Saw Panic!'s performance at the VMAs.... not good... they sounded like a non-coordinated wall of rock.
Saw Franz Ferdinand live earlier this year... they sounded fantastic.
That's the point I wanted to make... the difference between the sound of Panic! and of other Next Wave contemporaries.
Nevertheless, I can also be critical to the bands that I like. Have you seen the review of the Editors' album that I've posted both here and on my blog??? Or I've also said many times that The Strokes (which are really good in their albums) weren't that good when I saw them live.
