Brakes' Beatific Visions
Posted: Mon May 21, 2007 5:11 amAnyone else been exposed to these guys? I guess they're officially now called BrakesBrakesBrakes due to a conflict with US band "The Brakes". Just glad they're not the English Brakes or Brakes UK. Anyway, great album this Beatific Visions. I guess you could call it a bit cowpunk - maybe more cowpoppunk but about as close to country as I'll ever get in any case. Their last album Give Blood had some rousing numbers, including two great covers - "Jackson", popularized by Johnny Cash and June Carter then later not-famously redone by Lou Miami, plus "Sometimes Always", done by The Jesus & Mary Chain with Hope Sandoval. Lots of great originals too.
This new album outdoes the last one in terms of original compositions, from the rousing start of "Hold Me in the River" to toe-tappers like "If I Should Die Tonight" to the lilting melody in "Mobile Communication". Brakes will likely never be popular, but if you're interested in something very different from the current crop of post-punk knockoffs, you just might like 'em. Looks like it can be sampled at iTunes and various places.
