It actually doesn't come as a shock at all, nor would it to anyone who's been around since 'Felt Mountain' IMHO. I was just thinking yesterday that if these guys really the cajones I thought they did, the new album would be a big departure from both 'Supernature' and 'Black Cherry'. New vid for "A&E" single. Does nothing for me. Could be some back catalog of Abba or Olivia Newton-John. Maybe I'm just missing something, I do tend to have "slow" ears and have things grow on me.

Is this Goldfrapp or Oddfrap? Really, what musical direction does this go? I was really expecting more. Even with ambient pop she was better on.

Actually I like it. Atmospheric and a bit ambient. I am sort of a sucker for songs like this. What the hell, I do like ABBA anyway. Curious as to what the entire cd is going to sound like. Probably won't win them any new audiences though, especially here in the States. I give them credit though for changing direction.

I'll reserve final judgment until I hear the whole album, but gosh, is this really a [i]single?![/i]

Okay, I've run through the whole album a few times now and am still having a real hard time getting my head around it. The first time, I had no bearing at all on what the hell the point of the album was. Toward the end of the first and into my second listen, I started getting the impression that this is some sort of prog-electro-folk. Interesting but just not [i]Goldfrapp[/i]. It's really [i]hippie[/i]. Once I detached myself from the fact that this is Goldfrapp, I actually started to like it more.

In retrospect, I guess I can't remember how long it took to really "get" Felt Mountain, now one of my all-time favorites. Not sure if this will ever be like that experience, but now I'm at least enjoying trying to peel this onion back. It's pretty bizarre sequencing though. The first half is super mellow - ultra chilled. My favorite run of songs doesn't actually come until tracks 7-9: A&E, Cologne Cerrone Houdini (my favorite so far), and Caravan Girl (the most upbeat). Oh, and it's not "next wave" by any stretch - I wouldn't know where to talk about it!

Postscript: just finished listening end-to-end on the sunrise train into NYC. That was extremely cool - sublime even. But I don't know how many more listens like that I'll have. It's very specific mood music, not the stuff you can pop on any time. It'd be great for a walk in the woods. And there seems to be a rationale to the sequencing - a slow groggy build-up to a still-chilled but upbeat awakening thru tracks 7-9 then an uber-chilled drawn-down with the ending track "Monster Love".

With a starting tagline like this, new wave folks gotta be interested:

"Following Soft Cell, Eurythmics, and Pet Shop Boys, Goldfrapp may be the last of the great eccentric English avant-pop duos."

I gave the new album a chance even though I didn't like the first single at all. I could only point out two songs for now that I like "Happiness" and "Cologne Cerrone Hudini". The second really reminds me of Utopia.
All the other songs somehow vocaly remind of Tori Amos and Beth Gibbons.

I just listened to this album on a cross-continent flight. I can't say I loved it, but it reeled me in enough that I listened to it about 3 times in a row trying to comprehend it. There are some beautiful moments, not much in the way of singles, though. I loved Happiness the best.
