I realize some of these have been posted in the Top Albums thread, but I figured the Top Songs would yield some fascinatingly diverse playlists.

So here goes my Top 25 of the year (see links below to songs unavailable on Amazon MP3 for previewing):

1. "My Sunken Treasure" - The Duke Spirit (has "classic" written all over it)
2. "Chicago" - The Uglysuit (wistful indie-pop genius)
3. "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmM2RwlxGt0" target="new">Walking on a Dream</a>" - Empire of the Sun (hooky as hell despite the low rent production)
4. "No Lucifer" - British Sea Power (one of the best "rock" songs of the year hands down)
5. "Calling and Not Calling My Ex" - Okkervil River (great storytelling, these guys)
6. "Ghosts" - Ladytron
7. "Snow in California" - The Stills
8. "Lovers in Japan" - Coldplay
9. "Border Guards" - The Rosebuds
10. "The Shaded Forests" - Deastro (crunchy and loud yet syrupy sweet synthpop)
11. "M79" - Vampire Weekend (something akin to baroque ska)
12. "Visions / Nobody Lost, Nobody Found" - Cut Copy (from the best '80s-influenced electropop/dance rock album of the year)
13. "Time to Pretend" - MGMT
14. "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YN2lsrWN34" target="new">We are the People</a>" - Empire of the Sun (here we go again ... another infectious electropop gem from down under)
15. "In the New Year" - The Walkmen
16. "Halfway Home" - TV on the Radio (my first thought was: wow, killer new Bloc Party!)
17. "Be the One" - The Ting Tings
18. "Judas" - The Verve
19. "I Will Possess Your Heart" - Death Cab for Cutie
20. "Don't Forget Sister" - Low vs Diamond
21. "Disclaimer" - The Dears (a bit like "Hiroshima Mon Amour" revisited but killer nonetheless)
22. "Again & Again" - Keane
23. "Chinese Blues" - Travis
24. "Re: Stacks" - Bon Iver
25. "Sex and Gasoline" - Rodney Crowell

Some honorable mentions:

Two things...1) I limited myself to one song per band. If I didn't, BSP, Foxes, and Duke Spirit would be half this list. 2) I notice some of the same bands with Mike but different songs - it felt like that kind of year, with some really good albums that might not have had that one absolute distinct single.

Ladyhawke is one of two albums I've been listening to a lot since Christmas, and no doubt that it's incredibly new wave. The other is The Gaslight Anthem. With more listening, I'd very likely have added tracks from each to my list.
