Great gig tonight from The Airborne Toxic Event. They had the Calder Quartet providing string support. They played a number of new tunes, and their new live cd/dvd was included with the price of the ticket. Gasoline, Does This Mean You're Moving On, and Sometime Around Midnight all sounded great. "Missy" turned into a long jam that closed out the first half of the show and included transitions into I'm on Fire (yes, the Springsteen tune, but they play it much better [:)]) and Folsom Prison Blues. They also played covers of Goodbye Horses from Q Lazarus and The Book of Love from the Magnetic Fields.

I'm gonna get all BSP about these guys again, like I did after I saw them last time. It was a great show and I look forward to seeing them again.

Thanks for the review. They're really are very entertaining live. The only criticism I hear sometimes is that they just seem a bit too earnest and well put-together for an indie outfit - if that really is a criticism - so it's funny they played some Springsteen.

you mean the fact that they have put out 1 CD and are already playing with a string quartet? It has me worried we haven't seen anything new from them, they are great live and loved the CD but if I'm not mistaken, he had those songs written for some time prior to the debut. It's been too long! DG, any mention of new material other than the one-off online songs?

They played at least 5 or 6 new songs, including the closing tune, which I think was called All At Once, and a ballad that was, well, no other word for it than "pretty". Oddly enough, the closing comment before playing All At Once from the lead signer was "Don't tell our record label that we're playing it". Maybe this doesn't bode well?

They said they weren't sure when the record was coming out (someone posted on another forum that they said earlier in the tour that it was coming out around January). The new songs were fine -- one or two have the potential to be marquee tunes. They said they had worked on the new album for 9 months. Being the band stalker geek I am, they said on their twitter feed today that they were in the studio put some finishing touches on the album or something like that. So, who knows when it's coming out?

I have to say that after the intermission, they came out without the quartet and tore the place up for a while. I wouldn't say they sounded "raw", but they sounded less polished during this part of the set and the crowd went crazy.

The CD "All At Once" is coming out 4/25 in Europe and 4/26 in the U.S.

The new album is out now!

Have been sampling this myself. I'm very curious to see if they've evolved to anything beyond a mainstream pop-rock band.

First impressions of the album: mmmmelllllowwwww. It's going to require a couple more listens for a final verdict, but it seems like maybe only half the tracks have the whole band playing -- which is a disappointment since the musicians are so talented. Many tunes seem almost folksy, one tune sounds like American Idiot-era Green Day, and it doesn't have the overall consistency of the first album. My favorite track so far is a bonus track on the deluxe edition. We'll see if anything's revealed in subsequent listens.

It's a pretty catchy single. Almost too polished though. Earcandy that I'll likely tire of quickly.
