Broadcast live from TFI on 22 December 2000, with an introduction by Elton John and accompanied by the London Boys Choir, the Pet Shop Boys perform the fan club only single: It Does'nt Often Snow At Christmas. I love how Elton John so publicly supports the Pet Shop Boys. I actually saw him and his whole party jumping around in a private balcony at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom when the Boys played there back in 1999 on the Nightlive Tour. Incidentally, Joe Jackson walked right by me on the way out after the show. Anyway, here's the file.....

Hey Marv -

Thanks for taking the time to post these great PSB songs. The thing that I like about those guys is that they are very learned in how they go about crafting a song. Really, I stopped listening to them after they put out Behavio(u)r, but only because I thought that was such a great album, and that anything else beyond that would pale in comparison. Now, I find myself enjoying their stuff from Bilingual onwards. I understand their concept for the Very album, but I'll have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate that era.

In particular, I've really enjoyed their stuff from Nightlife to the present. I was blown away with Miracles and Flamboyant. I have the Miracles EP (I think it's a beautiful song), but I'm having a hard time locating the Flamboyant material. If you have it, do you know if it's any good--the remixes, I mean? Their DVD of thier greatest hits is very well done, and quite worth the price.

I agree MAS. The Boys' really have the pop song formula down and they're so good at these thematic album concepts. You mention Nightlife for instance, where every track is a conversation or scenario that plays itself out at night when perceptions and attitudes are different. Release was thematic in it's instrumentation as a more traditional guitar rock band. Of course Bilingual was done after the South American Discovery tour so you had this major Latin thing going on which was not hard to do considering the triumph that was Domino Dancing / Don Juan.

Incidentally, this Hispanic influence mirrors that of Madonna's and the newly released remix of Sorry done by none other than the Pet Shop Boys themselves (wow, what a perfect fit) underscores another strong element of PSB culture. And that is the Collaboration. Their mastery of the pop song comes from an unabashed love for pop tunes and pop idols.

The earliest manifestation probably goes back to What Have I Done to Deserve This with Dusty Springfield, an idol from their youth. What about Hallo Spaceboy with David Bowie? In Denial with Kylie Minogue? All of Electronic's first album? Getting Away With it, for example or Disappointed for the Cool World soundtrack. Ever hear the live rendition of So Sorry I Said with Sylvia Mason James? No Regrets with Robbie Williams. The Crying Game with Boy George. Love is Everywhere with Cicero. Liza Minelli's Results album.

Anyway, let me digress before Blir comes in here bashing me for loving the Pet Shop Boys more than New Order [:D] Here, check out the Madonna track remixed by the Boys. And yes, that's Neil doing backup vocals. This track comes courtesy of Schwenko - thanks dude!

An extra special download today of the Pet Shop Boys covering Neil Young's Philadelphia, live on BBC television. This is a Quicktime video so be prepared for a slightly lengthy download though it should'nt be too bad with most of us having high speed internet connections.

The cover version is another important aspect of PSB culture. Elvis Presley's Always On My Mind and U2's Where the Streets Have No Name only scratch the surface of PSB's ability to lovingly reinterpret the art of artists they both admire and wish to pay homage to. The wonderful thing about your favorite artist covering their favorite artists is that you truly begin to gain insight as to what motivates and inspires them, what touches them. Usually relegated to b-sides or bonus tracks where an artist can have a little extra freedom wihout the pressure of necessarily having to adhere to the commercial radio friendly format or better yet, the special project where personal passions again reveal themselves in a different way, a solid cover song brings the artist down to our level by telling us that hey, we're diehard fans too.

Wow! I haven't been to the boards for a while. This is a great thread, as I am a rabid PSB fan. Thanks for all the postings!

I have problems running iTunes on my PC (slows down my machine), so I found a shareware M4a to MP3 converter called WMA MP3 Converter by Xilisoft. I downloaded it from twocows.com.

New York City based My Robot Friend wrote a song called "We're the Pet Shop Boys" in honor of the brilliant duo. Neil and Chris were so impressed by this that they actually covered their own homage and included it as a bonus track to the sophisticated and flowery dance nugget of gold "Miracles".
