Girlfriend by ?

An earlier thread reminded me that I still look for a track named girlfriend. It was done by several artists like Plebbles or the Beautiful South but the version I want is by a different artists (male). I thought Curiosity Killed the Cat did it but I've never been able to confirm this. Can you help?

Pebbles is the original, right?

I have the BS version and it's fun. I'm not aware of any other covers of this song, and the Covers Project web site doesn't list any, but I'd love to know more about it if there is one.

CKTC would certainly be fun, I really like them.

Could it be Matthew Sweet?

IMO: His Album which goes by the same name is a great listen from start to finish.

Ohh Hexicon.. can you please chime in with me here? [:X][;)]

Here's <a href="http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=F0538D4858A4850E" target="blank">his take on 'Girfriend'</a>

I'll also throw in a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjXsW7sY1tY&search=Matthew%20Sweet%20Girlfriend target="blank">link</a> to his pretty cool anime inspired video.[8D]

Damn,...I've been trying different artists with this title for a week now and by now I believe I must have dreamt that I had remembered a version by an other artist then Pebbles when I first listened to the Beautiful South's version of that song. I would have sworn that there was a different version, male artist and more uptempo than the Pebbles/BS versions and in the style that Curiosity Killed The Cat would have done it. i remembered it so well, back then, that I even thought I knew the differences in the way the lyrics were sung...
anybody know any other versions than these:
Pebbles - Girlfriend (1987)
Beautiful South - Girlfriend (1990)
Senseless Things - Girlfriend (not the song I was looking for!)
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend (not the song I was looking for!)
Johnny P - Girlfriend 1987 (haven't heard it, but seems to be Reggae)
Babyface - Girlfriend 1987 (the writer and producer, said to have recorded the song himself, but can't confirm this)
Thx,
Plastik

Consider yourself chimed [;)] Top 5 best ever.
P.S. (Not really related to gofctf's question) A lot of people hate Liz Phair's s/t 2003 album, but I have this theory that the Girlfriend album was a subtle but pervasive influence, both musically and lyrically.

What the heck, if we're gonna talk about songs called "Girlfriend" that are not by Matthew Sweet, let's twist this around and post a song that actually IS by Matthew Sweet, but is NOT called "Girlfriend" -- or is it? Give "Good Friend" a listen:

Check out http://www.afn.org/~afn04314/msmp3s.htm for lots more (if you can get the page to load -- something is wrong with my browser).

Thanx for that demo track pb.[;)]

Wow, what a difference when you redo the percussion (beat changeups / syncopation) and put some more edginess in the fretwork![^]

Sorta akin to what was done with Blondie's 'Heart of Glass'[8D]

To completely hijack this thread, may I suggest that all Matthew Sweet fans head on out and purchase the new Legacy Edition of "Girlfriend"?

Finally, one of the best guitar pop albums of all time gets the treatment it deserves.

The album has been remastered, and the Legacy set includes an extra CD -- the hard-to-find "Goodfriend" album, featuring many demo and unreleased tracks.

In addition, the remastered "Girlfriend" CD itself adds 3 bonus tracks, from the Japanese version of "Girlfriend", one of which is the "Good Friend" song I posted above.

All this and a 24-page booklet with essay too!

Thank you guys...but now i'd appreciate if you'd post what I was looking for. If the thing doesn't exist I'd suggest you go and get yourself a karaoke version of that song and let me hear your interpretation[:D].
