Silent Running "Shades of Liberty"

Does anyone remember the irish band Silent Running? They recorded an album called "Shades of Liberty", which was released at the States as "Emotional Warfare". I remember I got it in 85, taped it and sold it, because even they appeared intense and real I thought they were trying to rip Simple MInds "Sparkle in the Rain" sound, and as everyone knows, back in the 80's clones were just unnaceptable. I've never seen that record again...

A few years ago I realized that it may have been the other way around. Does anybody knows the facts about this? Also, if anyone has it, please share it with us as it may be a great find for the ones who haven't gotten the chance to listened to it yet.

I remember them quite well. I have one of the singles still. I bought the cassette version of 'Shades Of Liberty' but I swapped it for something a few years ago. Most of it was fine (like you said, very Simple Minds) but I do remember there was one very strong album track on it which really stood out. Sadly I can't remember it's title off hand! I'll have to look it up! I'm getting old....

Oh yes, this album is at the top of my most wanted on CD list. I have a CDR ripped from my old album and I have a mint copy of the album I got off ebay but unfortunately I don't have a deck anymore.

I always thought they sounded like both Simple Minds and a little U2 on this album. Although I thought the sound was more New Gold Dream than Sparkle in The Rain. Both albums (Shades of Liberty and New Gold Dream) were produced by Pete Walsh.

Thanks a lot for posting such a great music! Now that I gave it a new listening I think you are right about being more New Gold Dream than Sparkle in the rain, because except for the loudness of the drums and the vocals up front, the scheme of the songs are much more like the former. Also, there's an almost "rockish" element to the songs that reminds me U2. (this is something I barely realized years ago)
I think not all the songs are at the same compositional level though -probably because there are 3 or 4 that are so outstanding that inevitably make the rest to fall behind-...

I can't stop laughing of joy, this is a memorable day for me!

I remember listening to Deep and Walk on Fire but they were so much different than Shades of Liberty. They were released in those years were you couldn't make much difference between Roxette or RicK Astley or any great 80's band. (except for New Order)
In the early 90s, most teenagers were making fun of 80s music just because of that, but once I showed them the earlier obscure stuff they went like WOW! They couldn't believe it... Big difference.
I didn't know there were any remixes. It would be awesome to listen to some of that...

Thanks gnj1958 for posting. I had this on vinyl, but hadn't listened to it in ages. It reminds me of the Simple Minds in the early 80s, as well.
