REQUEST - The PROMISE (Australian band 83-87)

Postby warwickjames » Thu Jun 04, 2015 11:10 pm

Hi!

Does anybody have any tracks by The PROMISE - ? (not the UK-based band, with the same name).

These guys were around between 1983 and 1987, originating in QLD, Australia. They made a small mark in the local charts, and released a number of singles.

LP - One in every colour

Track-list -
01. Lessons in love
02. Walking with a weight
03. Blue world
04. Show me
05. A heart to sell
06. Something in the air
07. One more day
08. Love is the hunter
09. Home for the Balmain boys
10. We've got it all
11. It's in your head she said
12. Will you come back

Singles -

A-side: (Living in a) Fault Line World (4:36) (double-A side release)
A-side: Love made me weird (3:26) (double-A side release)

A-side: Heart to sell (2:41)
B-side: Next time (3:27)

A-side: Walking with a weight (3:19)
B-side: Abstract relations (2:29)

A-side: Will you come back again? (3:19)
B-side: Paronomasia (3:38)

A-side: Something in the air
B-side: Building Castles

A-side: Lessons in love
B-side: Watching the World

I'd love to hear anything people have on this band!

Indeed! Got any scans, or even better some audio rips?

Unfortunately I don't have this record, but Daniel promised he'd post a rip of it soon. :)

That would be magic! I'm hoping that someone has got rips of the 7" 45 b-sides. I'm slowly collecting them (1 so far, sadly), and will rip them to FLAC & MP3 as soon as I've got most if not all of them, then post them here also. (unless someone beats me to the punch!).

All the best!

Here's a note from the lead singer of the band re their first single -

Greg here, thanks for your interest! The band had been writing furiously right through '83 and into '84. Our then manager, Alan Barker and we thought it would be great to get some product out to really drum up interest in the band. We picked 2 of our then strongest songs and decided to do a double A sided single. Luckily 4ZZZ and 2JJJ picked up Love made me Weird and that really boosted our profile! Next thing we had EMI, Mushroom Records and Festival Records chasing us. Love made Me Weird was written by David and Faultline by me. It was produced by our then sound engineer, Ian Taylor.

wowee! Yep, looks like you've got rips of all the mainstream singles! I'd love to hear these again! I'm sure other 80s nw fans would also - they are very typical of that 84-5 sound, imo.

Thanks again!

warwickjames, I don't have the LP but I am currently watching a good copy to bid on. It will cost me arounf $35.00 as it's being shipped from down under. FYI, I put aside a budget each month which I spend on rare records. Unfortunately I am way over the budget already in June and I can get kicked out by my wife any minute now.

Hi, yep, I've seen that one on ebay. It just went off in the last day or two. Was that you? :) I was considering buying that one and getting a local studio to convert it - expensive on both sides of the deal.

But if you're on it, pm me your paypal address and I'll slip you some $$ for the end result!

Plus the recordings you've already got :) Then we'll have a complete set of material, apart from that 'early' double-A side, which I've NEVER seen in all my years of looking, stores back in the day, 2nd-hand record shops through till now, ebay, gumtree, garage sales... must've been uber-limited in numbers.

PS: here's a post I put up about them a while ago -

http://80sdreamer.blogspot.com.au/2015/ ... -gold.html

That post has everything I could find out about them. Unfortunately, they've chosen a very common band name, so separating the wheat from the chaff was a little difficult.

Damn! The LP I was watching has sold. Oh well, on to next copy! Anyhow you can dl the songs here:
https://www.sendspace.com/file/f2fh0w

If I come across another copy of the LP, I'll send you a message to see if you'd want to pitch in.

Cheers
D.

Great stuff that I am hearing for the first time. I got in touch with the bass player & he was nice enough to send me the entire album plus a demo...the rest I have now so I have everything but that first single + B side

Hi!

Yep, same here. The LP itself was only a 128kbps rip, but still sounds damn fine. Will upload here over the coming week, unless you beat me to it. They're great guys - very accessible.
