Too bad you can't put FLAC on ipods, ipads, smart phones etc. So despite its great sound quality, it's kind of useless until it works on all platforms.
As nobody should, put high quality on a low quality system. But, if you do have a high quality DAC/AMP like a Chord Hugo, then the mobile system has changed to high quality. The question then becomes why would you play a low quality lossy track on a high quality system? You wouldn't, so your point is system determinant. It's up to you if you want to hear your music in the best quality possible or just settle for what the masses do, so so to outright bad.
FYI, most of these mobile players can play FLAC and hires with the proper software. But again would make no sense if you don't have a quality DAC/AMP and headphones to take advantage of that quality.
