Returning with the further installment, here's the 9th volume - how time flies! The second one with songs mastered loudly for no reason at all. A very diverse bunch, poppy ones rubbing shoulders with the experiments and other oddities. I tried to make sense of it all, you be the judge how it came out. Hope it won't be a wasted 52 minutes :D

01. Zaine Griff - Turn out the light
02. The Rezistance - Get off
03. Marcie's Still Waiting - 66
04. Cuddly Toys - Broken mirrors
05. Vice Versa - Eyes of Christ
06. Jean-Jacques Burnel - Ozymandias
07. Five or Six - Lost cause
08. V-Sor, X - Back room commentator
09. Patrik Fitzgerald - Straight boy
10. Nick Nicely - 49 cigars
11. Claire Hamill - Ultraviolet light
12. The Icicle Works - Sirocco
13. Blondie - Poet's problem
14. The Style Council - All year round
15. Tik & Tok - Psych-out at the Dunheadin masqued ball
16. Blanket of Secrecy - In the garden
17. Adam Ant - Why do girls love horses?
18. The Vapors - Sunstroke
19. Friends Again - Bird of paradise
20. Haircut One Hundred - After it's all been said and done

That was a good one, Frost, put a smile on my face, thanks :D

You mentioned Fatal Charm way back - that's one of my favourite obscure 1980s bands ever! Criminally underrated, as they say. Nice to see them being remembered!

Postby Passing_Stranger » Mon Feb 03, 2025 8:35 am

Thank you guys for the nice feedback! Warms my heart no end :D Meanwhile we're on Volume 10 now - two third of the series down. And it's another thematic compilation - those short B-sides that were also songs from the albums. It's a time-honoured tradition to feature LP songs on flipsides, and quite a few New Wave performers were sticking to it for some reason or other. I'm of two minds about it, as a rule I prefer something original, be it even an instrumental/dub or live recording. But often the record companies got to decide, and it's interesting to check the, say, US single releases from the UK performers where they often substituted original B-sides with album songs (Europeans were generally using the LP songs on flipsides too). Perhaps it was a way to promote the LP, but then why buy the 7" in the first place? Not really a well thought-out decision.

Anyway, I had a bit of a hard time compiling this volume - it had to be both some previously unfeatured performer and a song under three minutes in length. Quite a task it turned out to be, let me say this much! But over time "stuff" gathered and now is the time to present the bunch. Most of these songs, I trust, you've heard, but hopefully this context will provide some interesting thoughts on them :D

01. Positive Noise - Tension
02. Wall of Voodoo - Full of tension
03. The Pretenders - Watching the clothes
04. Chrisma - Black silk stocking
05. The Cars - Candy-O
06. Thompson Twins - Anything is good enough
07. The Go-Go's - Beatnik beach
08. Comateens - Nightmare
09. Flash and the Pan - Don't vote
10. Planning by Numbers - Kinetik
11. Anne Clark - Poem for a nuclear romance
12. Weekend - Sleepy theory
13. Mi-Sex - I don't know
14. Minor Detail - Others need you
15. Savage Progress - Tin man
16. Torch Song - Microdot daylight
17. The Books - Hirohito
18. The B-52's - 6060-842
19. Kraftwerk - Numbers
20. Laurie Anderson - White lily

The thematic part of the series continues, and now's the time for the 11th volume. It's special in that all the songs were taken straight from vinyl with no further "bettering", so they all have quite a lot of audible surface noise. I decided to group them this way for a more consistent sound of the previous volumes. Also, this way you'll have that famed warm, natural and authentiс journey through the vinyl sound experience for more than 50 minutes - crackle, hiss and pops galore! :D The range of topics covered is very diverse, from biting social commentary worthy of the Smiths from Kissing the Pink and Deluxe A through some lyrical eloquence of Mr Hewson and Voice Farm to the fearless, pioneering experimentation of the famed Electronic Ensemble and The Microbes, it's a wild knuckle ride, hold yourselves very much tight!

01. Electronic Ensemble - Theme from The Babylon Run
02. The Microbes - Ministry of Space
03. P1/E - Dependence
04. Cabaret Voltaire - Empty walls
05. Project Future - Arcade lover
06. Deluxe A - Friends
07. Bearz - Julie
08. The Fallout Club - The beat boys
09. Scarlet Architect - Brave gestures
10. Peter Hewson - Her
11. Philip Jap - 100 Japanese babies
12. Kissing the Pink - Hand-held cameras
13. Search Party - More
14. Auto Da Fé - Auto da fé
15. The News - Only echoes
16. Aztec Camera - Queen's tattoos
17. Fingerprintz - Nervz
18. Way of the West - Prove it
19. Two People - It's obvious
20. Voice Farm - Sleep

Slowly but surely we're nearing the end of the series. Here's the 12th volume where I decided to group the non-English shorties. I just don't feel they'd mix well with the ones from the UK, US etc, besides there's just not that many of them that I managed to find in lossless. Funnily enough, they're split evenly, with five from (then West) Germany, France, Spain and Sweden, I simply grouped them by country (seemed the easiest approach, you may rearrange to your liking of course!). One thing, though, the sound is all over the place, there was nothing I could do. Still, the songs are quite nice at the very least so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

01. Piefke und Pafke - Format
02. Die Neue Weltmacht - Orientträume
03. Alu - Liebe Machen
04. Ti-Tho - Die Liebe ist ein Abenteuer
05. Stahlnetz - Wir Sind Glucklich (Glaube Daran)
06. Rational Youth - Pile ou Face
07. D.Stop - Clo Clo Requiem
08. X-Ray Pop - Amazone
09. Force de Frappe - Pas Satisfait
10. Deutscher Kaiser - Danse!
11. Mecano - Quiero Vivir en la Ciudad
12. Betty Troupe - Ms 20
13. La Mode - Panorama
14. Metal y Ca - Humano
15. El Aviador Dro - El Retorno de Godzilla
16. Moß Garten - Zon Zon
17. Adolphson-Falk - Julen Är en Härlig Tid
18. Royalty - Kom Kom!
19. Lustans Lakejer - Man Med Paraply
20. Adams Fall - Komme Seg Vekk

Hello again! 13 is an unlucky number so it took me unusually more time to gather and compile stuff for it, a couple of songs I managed to get literally yesterday! But it turned out nice in the end. It's a regular volume, the last one for some time, and a usual mixed bunch, though more international than most volumes before. Some big names, some side projects, some obscure ones, all in all quite diverse and yet somehow well-rounded. You be the judge, though.

01. Feargal Sharkey - Anger is holy
02. Beranek - Hotter than the sun
03. Henry Badowski - Making love with my wife
04. Until December - We are the boys
05. Phil Thornalley - Last too long
06. The Creatures - Divided
07. Secession - Reflections
08. Sense - Life's too hard
09. Felt - I will die with my head in flames
10. King - Ain't no doubt
11. Nik Kershaw - Progress (live)
12. Scars - Author! Author!
13. Danielle Dax - Up in arms
14. Siglo XX - Lines of hope
15. Martin Dupont - Lost and late
16. Night in Cologne - The final design
17. Plastics - Pate
18. Godley & Creme - Welcome to breakfast television
19. Kaa Antilope - The break of day
20. The Reels - World's end

Re: SHARE: Short New Wave B-sides Vol. 14

So the time has come, here's the last volume for a foreseeable future. Frankly I exhausted my resources but also, judging by the results of my research, I featured almost every performer of any importance. Short (under three minutes long) B-sides were already hard to come by, and it got harder with each volume. I have some stray ones still but not enough for a full volume, maybe in time I'll be able to complete and will post it, but I don't know when. If somebody has a song or two to add - you're most welcome. Until then...

Anyway, this volume comprises songs by the bands and artists already featured in previous editions. Some of them had more than one short B-side so I decided to group those for further listening as they're nice/quirky/interesting/fun songs and I wouldn't want you guys to miss out on them. A surprisingly listenable collection it turned out to be. I of course would like to thank the fellow NWO members NuWavo80s and Rissan for their help with the missing stuff - you're great, guys!

Again, the last one for some time, but by no means the last post in this thread yet. See you in due course! :D

01. The Belle Stars - Turn back the clock
02. H2O - Stranger to stranger
03. Men at Work - Crazy
04. XTC - Don't lose your temper
05. Bill Nelson - Instantly yours
06. Classix Nouveaux - Test tube babies
07. Lene Lovich - The fly
08. Buggles - Fade away
09. Devo - Turn around
10. The Cure - 2 late
11. The Stranglers - Since you went away
12. Squeeze - The fortnight saga
13. ABC - Minneapolis
14. Madness - Jennie (A portrait of)
15. Gary Numan - Rumour
16. Eurythmics - Home is where the heart is
17. Siouxsie & The Banshees - Follow the sun
18. Duran Duran - Secret Oktober
19. Tears for Fears - When in love with a blind man
20. Ultravox - Dreams?

Thank you for your dedication to the music. These compilations keep NWO fun and interesting. They also help fuel the fire of the serious New Wave enthusiast. If you think about it, it's really amazing the body of work produced by New Wave musicians during that time period. It was great to be a part of it. This era will never be replicated.
