These guys got a lot of college radio airplay in the late 80s. They were moody, droney neo-psychedelia, although that description doesn't quite do them justice. I distinctly remember my neighborhood rekkid store having at least one of their albums, "If tomorrow I were leaving for Lhasa, I wouldn't stay a minute more..."

It was on my list of discs to pick up, but the next time I went looking for it, it was gone. That was like 17 years ago...

Now both of their albums have all but vanished from the face of the earth. In my cyber-journies, I came across a post on some board from an alleged former member of the band, who claimed even he couldn't find copies of any of their stuff!

Occasionally, copies appear on eBay or online specialty record stores for outrageous prices ($50+), but I'm hoping someone out there has mp3s or could burn a CD-R...

Anyone? Anyone?

Try GEMM.com for copies of the vinyl, but be sitting down when you do this...the prices range from $50.00 to $250.00 for a copy of "If tomorrow I were leaving for Lhasa".... Also a few singles and comps featuring the group available.

Nothing 'gainst a good price for a good record, but think twice before you spend that much money. As someone else hear said: sometimes you look for a record that has become kind of an obsession and when you finally have it it doesn't turn out to be as good as you remembered it to be. You might find yourself wondering if it was worth the effort, not to mention the money.

BTW, their stuff is easily available over e***. Both their albums two.

Actually, what's available over at e*** (rhymes with "pee bay") at the moment is a 2-song 7" (two different copies available from one seller). I guess $12 (for one of the copies) wouldn't break the bank or anything, but it's still a little expensive for two songs, with a photocopied sleeve. But $30? Blech.

Well, eMule kept putting me at like number 3000 in each queue. So I hightailed it over to Soulseek and have had much better luck there. Still, thanks for the tip! I never could find anything by RTS on WinMX, so I assumed it would be just as rare on other P2P sites.

Incidentally, I don't know why I never gave Soulseek a try until this week...

You could give me a hint how to operate souls... as I've tried it several times and got fed up with waiting and not finding anything.
Besides 80s stuff I was desperately looking for some 50/60s Doo Wops and thought it might be the right place to go but alas hardly anything popped up. Or do I have to enter one of the groups? How do I do that? I haven't got a clue...

Sometimes it takes a while for searches to pop up. One nice feature of Soulseek is that you can conduct simultaneous searches and it will continue searching for as long as you're online. Also, if you use the "Wish List" button, you can enter search text in, and you'll be alerted automatically as soon as files matching your search become available (i.e., someone who has them logs in). I'd search for band names as opposed to song titles, to make it more general.

Basic stuff: Make sure the "Search Files" screen is visible, and close out any distracting panes using "View" from the menu. Click on the "Transfers" button to keep an eye on what you're downloading (if you get that far!).

The groups thing is confusing; that threw me for a loop the first time I logged on, too. Those are just chat areas, and you can ignore them (unless you want to chat with people).

If you're not getting ANY results for ANY search, it could be a port issue, and I don't know much about messing around with those settings.

Aside from that, I guess the only other practical advice I can offer is just to make sure you have the latest version (156c)...

Also, the rooms are good for finding people with similar collections or types of music you may be looking for.
Right click on the room list and click refresh to see ALL of the rooms available. There is even a New Wave Outpost Room!
As far as the search, it will indeed search the whole time but if you want better results, click stop search and search again frequently and you will get better results.
