There was a song played in the heyday of new wave - around 1982, that had a "gangster" theme, tied to the old gangster movies of the 40's. Singer same in a high voice, and there was some diologue in it, that was as if it were out of some old movie - maltese falcon or some such... Does this ring a bell for any of the board experts?

I would third that guess, Friends of Mr. Cairo by Jon Anderson and Vangelis. It's also long, about 12 minutes, but you could cut it off after the main bit at 5:30.

That is definitely it... I was just searching for anyplace that might sell the MP3 - iTunes, Buy.com, Legalsounds.com, MP3sugar.com, etc. Could not find it... So.... Thank you very very much, I have not heard this in forever (and your right, KROQ phased it out at around the 5 minute mark) and it is great to hear it again... I am ever amazed at the resources and expertize of this board!
