There was a version of the 60's classic "96 tears" that was often played in LA on KROQ in the early 80's. I gatta beleive it was an 80's band cover, and I really liked it. I have searched for the version online but have never found it.

Does anyone know who I would be talking about?

A great "? And The Mysterians" song, covered by "The Stranglers," and the ROQ played that a lot, also "Smash Mouth" later in the '90s. Any other New Wave-ish bands cover this song??? [?]

The Stranglers?? Later 80s though.

Could it have been the Garland Jeffreys cover of this song from his 1981 LP 'Rock'n'Roll Adult'?

Yeah, the Garland Jeffreys' version got a lot of airplay in my neck of the woods.

Are you looking for the version I have also been looking for which featured a woman counting throughout the song from 1 to 96?

KROQ used to play it to death but no one else seems to remember it.

Thanks for the tips!!! I had no recolection of a woman counting through it (but if it was played on KROQ '78 to '85 i would have heard it), nor did I remember the name Garland Jeffereys..
But I went to this sight off a search,

and listened to a snip of Garland Jefferey's version of 96 tears, and while I am not 100% positive, I think this is it... It is the first sample that I have found that matches my memory of it fairly closely. I had heard a stranglers live version but that was not it. I think the Jeffereys version is, so I will try to acquire it and listen to the whole track... Thanks again!

Yeah the version I have been looking for has the woman counting...I have about 7 different versions of the friggin song and I am going insane!! It's not The Stranglers, Todd Rundgren, Suicide, Joe King Carasco or any of the others that people have suggested.

KROQ played it in the very early 80's.

Ever found yourself tearing your house apart looking for something you didn't really care that much about in the first place? This is the hell I am in.

I don't even remember if it was that good a version.

I wonder if it's the Tom Tom Club? This is the description from the album review: "the molasses paced, ominous, and ultimately misguided version of "96 Tears"

The problem I have with allmusic is that they list the album dates mostly by cd release & it isn't a good representation of when the song was actually released.

I've been trying to find/remember who did a cover of 'Friday on my Mind' by the Easybeats that was faster and power poppy and got played a lot on KROQ in the early 80's and the one I'm thinking of is probably not by Earthquake, Gary Moore, John Kincade, David Bowie or London. Anybody know what I'm babbling about? Or am i misremembering?

No Drew, thre was a fast power pop version of "Friday On My Mind!" I'm going to have to think about the band's name though...
