Hey,

I hope I'm not going too off topic here, I wanted to share with you guys three unreleased albums that are truly some of my all time favorites. It's a full on shame these albums weren't released. They originate from the mid 2000's, but they're definitely NEW WAVE and all three albums represent influences from the 80s.

First up is Protocol. Signed to Polydor in 2005 the band released 2 singles and nearly put out an album. It was reviewed in Q Magazine, calling it "sub Kajagoogoo" it got one star and the album was shelved shortly thereafter. Their artwork is amazing. Their b-sides incredible, and they do share influences with Kajagoogoo, Duran Duran, The Killers and a bunch more. They're great. Their lead singer John Pritchard went on to form Bang Bang Club a few years ago with Protocol's keyboardist (they also have an unreleased LP). Pritchard is now a contestant on the UK version of the Voice. I've included all three b-sides.

Next up is Captain, a brilliant band who had Trevor Horn produce their first album "This Is Hazelville" Their second album is shockingly better. Epic synthy chamberpop with huge fun dancy choruses. While they album remains locked in Atlantic Records vaults, the band has reformed and claims to have recorded a new album. I can't wait to hear it, but "Distraction" will be tough to top for the few who've heard it. "Keep An Open Mind" was released on three formats with three b-sides and a great video in 2008. The album was mentioned in NME and then never appeared. I found a promo on eBay and it changed my life. I've included all the b-sides as well as an exclusive song Captain offered on their Myspace.

Here's a video from their debut LP from 2005, produced by Trevor Horn. The song is called "Frontline" and, like most Captain songs, after two listens, the chorus becomes the best thing you've ever heard.

Finally I offer The Departure's unreleased second album "Inventions" was scheduled to be released by Parlophone in 2008. Their debut "Dirty Words" was released in 2005. Their angular post punk New Wave was also very 80's. The band released the uncharictaristically guitar oriented "7 Years" on their myspace and as a promo, and I guess it confused their fanbase. Lead vocalist David Maddox-Jones went on to form NewIslands briefly with the single "Out Of Time" before finding his true calling with the synthpop trio [STRANGERS] If you haven't heard [STRANGERS] they make the kind of synthpop I wish Depeche Mode still made. Sort of a cross between "Black Celebration" and "Violator" dark, explosive and always fun. They've released 3 EPs and a handful of singles. They're giving away a song a month starting this week on their website in exchange for an e-mail. If you haven't heard them, they're worth checking out. Seriously, not a bad song.
