Have you ever heard a 12" Mix and thought to yourself "That's ok, but it could be better." For me, that usually happens when it becomes more of an instrumental. When I was remastering the Hazel O'Connor album 'Smile' for Cherry Red several years ago, I took it upon myself to create a new edit of the single 'Don't Touch Me'. The 12" mix of the song was primarily instrumental and I thought it was a big waste, but then that's how Martin Rushent often did 12" mixes, which I didn't really understand. So I spliced the single and 12" mixes together to my liking. I guess CR could have gotten into trouble for this, but who cares...

Over the years, I've taken it upon myself to create my own alternate mixes by splicing together different versions of songs to create (to me) a more satisfying extended mix. Here are 4 of them that I've done. I hope you enjoy these Rubellan Edits:

Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know?
The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made Of
Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short
Sparks - Tryouts For The Human Race

These are excellent! Love Duran Duran 'Is There Something I Should Know@ - I always wanted something like this rather than the Monster Mix they put out.
Other tracks which I think could be improved in this way are Too Shy by Kajagoogoo (if I remember correctly the first verse is missing from the 12" mix) and although never an extended mix, the joinging of Tears For Fears 'Laid So Low' with the B side 'Tears Roll Down' (instrumental) - I think this would work well.

Thank you very much for these edits, they're great! This is something that I also do! I basically cut off parts that I don't like from too long versions, or cheesy d-d-d-d-ub effects that ruin the track to my ears [:D] I have also combined some extended / instrumentals or reused parts of a short version to create an extended one. I should try to remember the tracks that I've edited through the years, locate them and maybe post them as well... someone might find them interesting [;)]

Unless I'm mistaken 2 obvious songs I recall not having a proper extended version were "The Look Of Love" and "Don't You Want Me". There were DJ Remix Service versions to compensate for a lack of a commercially available 12" vocal extended. So unless someone can point in the direction of original 12" releases that were vocal and not dub in nature it would be interesting to hear what Scott or perhaps others have done / could do. [:)]

GREAT job on these- thanks for sharing. as for songs i always wanted a good remix of: eurythmics' "here comes the rain again." NONE EXISTS. the long version and the album version and the single version are all basically the same, with no instrumental breakdowns, or dub effects, or new bits, nothing, the long version fades later, that's it. and they remixed all their singles for 12" versions, but not this. hmmm!

Thanks Rubellan!!

One song that comes to mind is "State of the Nation" by Industry. Would like to see an extended treatment to that song.

Merry Christmas! :)

I did one for Don't You Want Me a couple years ago...
The Human League - Don't You Want Me [eLeMeNOhPeaQ Extended Vocal Mix] 8min 30sec

(Don't stream my edit in Zippyshare's media player, as the quality is lowered quite a bit.)

Side Note: I haven't gotten around to checking out Rubellan's edits yet. Looking forward to his DD and THL edits.

Loved the HL Don't You Want Me. I've also enjoyed your Thompson Twins Remixes. How many mixes have you done for Sister Of Mercy ? If so can you please post them....

Thanks. You've much improved "Is There Something ...". The Monster Mix was turd.

Seeing Martin Rushent's name here reminds me of how disappointed I was with Altered Images' "See Those Eyes" 12" (or was it "I Could Be Happy"?).

Here in the UK, there was a 12" 4 track ep of "Look Of Love" (Parts I to IV) and the extended version was Part III which clocks in at 4:18, not exactly over extended but slightly different than the single mix.

5 years ago, I took the Extended Mix of "Sister Of Mercy" and created a dub-like edit. Since there wasn't an official dub, I took it upon myself to make one. I focused on the instrumental parts and the lyric, "She's the one who's living in paradise," and played around with layering them.

What I ended up with is 4min 15sec track, "Living In Paradise [eLeMeNOhPeaQ Sister Of Mercy Dub]".

Not my best work, but I had fun making it.

Yes, I was aware of this 12" thanks. Interested in a true vocal extended which typically were well over 5 minutes. I mentioned those 2 songs because they were huge hits and it was odd that significantly extended vocal versions of neither were available in stores.
