REQ: Soft Cell

Postby Passing_Stranger » Fri Jan 02, 2015 5:01 pm

Hello guys, a very happy New Year for everybody and a little request - does anybody have these tracks by Soft Cell? :

Say Hello Wave Goodbye (instrumental) - from the UK 7"
Barriers - also from the UK 7" (5:22)
Heat - from the US 7" (3:54)
Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go - from the 1987 US 7" (3:58)

I'd like an mp3 of 320 kbps (or a flac/ape if somebody's willing to share).

By the way, I was suprised to find that not everything by them is already on CD - or maybe I missed something?

This is also on CD -- Hard Rock Cafe: New Wave. Amazon has them used for pennies.

Thanks i've taken this. Is it not available on any of the many Soft Cell compilations to date?

Only available on the Hard Rock Cafe: New Wave CD. The edit was created in 1987 specifically for the U.S. market when the song was suddenly "discovered" by Top 40 radio stations.

Wasn't it actually created in 1981 and originally featured on the U.S. 1981 7" promo single?

In fact, you're right, it was on the 7" Promo in 1981. But was it first released commercially in 1987, in response to Top 40 airplay?

Since DJPaulT posted the 1981 promo 7", I can now confirm that the 1987 edit is the same, but the 1981 7" fades out early, hence the ~4:01 running time rather than 4:11.

My sister bought the original 1981 USA 7" with the 2:38 version and "Memorabilia" on the B-Side. I would often sneak it out of her record collection and listen to both sides over and over.

I don't remember exactly when I bought MY 7" but it must have been in 1987 because I have the same 7" that Passing_Stranger shared. I doubt it was released because USA radio finally "discovered" it - the song reached #8 in 1982 in the USA so by 1987 it had already been a hit and did not need discovering hehe. I think it was issued more as an "Oldie" which may also explain why "What" was the B-side on it, since it had also been a single.

I do remember hearing this 4:11 mix on the radio in 1982, so it was probably the promo 7" they were playing. I remember not understanding why my sister's record was so short lol. So I was excited to find that version a few years later on the 7" I now own, as it's always been my favorite version of the song. Obviously it's rare to find on CD so I re-created the mix myself a few years ago. I was surprised that the actual playing time of the 7" was 4:11 and not 3:58 as indicated on the label. Of course now I know that this happens quite often, so I don't always trust what is printed on a label.

How odd that Dave Ball did not recall this version of the song! If I were a pop star I'd probably be my own biggest fan and collect EVERY mix of EVERYTHING I did lol. Of course, it was customary in the 80's for the USA record labels to create or commission different mixes for the US market which may explain why he was not familiar with it.

Also interesting that they didn't make much money off their biggest hit, but it makes sense as the songwriters always get the larger percentage of sales.

Hmm, I'm confused or you're confused. I said DJPaulT ripped the 1981 promo 7", which is the version that's 4:01 (marked as 3:58). The 1987 Back To Back Hits 7" with "What!" on the flip is the full 4:11 (but also marked as 3:58).

My local radio stations would often play a unique edit of "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?" which ran about 5 minutes. This unique version cut at about 2:48 (of the original 12") to an earlier instrumental part in "Where Did Our Love Go?" The edit was actually much smoother, in my opinion. I have re-created this edit and would be happy to upload it if anyone wishes. I've always wondered if it were on some official type of promo CD or a unique edit that radio stations in my area (Grand Rapids) played. Up until the past few years, I only heard this unique 5-minute edit. Nowadays, I hear the 1981 promo 7" edit, as originally released. Does anyone know anything about this special 5-minute cut of the medley? Or, is it just an exclusive radio station edit?

Ahhhh probably because I mentioned hearing the 4:11 version on the radio in 1982 - It must have actually been the 4:02 promo version, but when I bought the 1987 7" (with the 4:11 version) I assumed it was the same mix from the radio 5yrs prior - I had no way to distinguish back then that the 7" I bought was 9 seconds longer than the mix I had heard on the radio ;-)
