The Unknown Beauty Of The 80's Vol. 172

Postby Rissan » Wed Sep 08, 2021 12:45 am

A new volume of the continuing story of the unknown 80's.

This weeks Volume was created in less then a week, to be precise last week. Last Monday I visited the cycle and found 30 singles from 1984 and around in the styles New Wave, Synthpop and Pop Rock.
During the week, besides the nice trips I made through our lovely country, I ripped all the singles and even ordered another 13 from Discogs. The last bunch arrived on Friday and I mainly ripped them over the weekend.

The result is this new volume, that strange enough, at least for my country, contains quite a few one-hit wonders. The one-hit wonders are: Al Corley (square rooms), Masquerade (guardian angel), The Fixx (Red Skies), Spider Murphy Gang (skandal in sperrbezirk), Matthew Wilder (break my stride), Gazebo (i like chopin) and Limahl (never ending story).

Of all the songs featured on this Volume only the track of The Fixx was known to me. So to be honest I was quite surprised about the singles, certainly the near mint condition of most of them, and off course about the quality of the featured tracks. Sometimes it is hard to believe why an artist seems to be unable to score a (second) hit. It certainly has nothing to do with the quality of the music, but mostly with the delusion of the day, the taste of the DJ or the market strategy of the record company.

I leave you with a nice bunch of great songs which will be up for a week.

Oh and what about the other 22 singles I hear you thinking. Well some were already featured on earlier volumes or compilations of mine, and several will make it on later, thematic, volumes or on a next Dutch New Wave volume.

The tracks:

01. Roman Holiday - Fire Me Up (3:29)
02. Al Corley - Don't Play With Me (4:30)
03. Klang - Mucho Macho Song (I don't want to spend the night with you) (3:46)
04. Self Defence - Behind Windows (2:44)
05. Fee - CIA (English version) (3:42)
06. Cole - Fool (3:53)
07. K 13 - This Kinda Life (5:07)
08. Simona Ray - Then Came You (3:30)
09. Masquerade - Everyday Loser (4:29)
10. Fassbinder / Russell - Stay (3:33)
11. The Fixx - Less Cities, More Moving People (3:33)
12. Marc Anthony Thompson - So Fine (4:06)
13. Rene Parker - Maureen (4:08)
14. Spider Murphy Gang - Pfüati Gott, Elisabeth (3:47)
15. Blue Garden - Staring Eyes (3:14)
16. Full Strength - My Only Problem (2:23)
17. Matthew Wilder - Bouncin' Off The Walls (3:38)
18. Gazebo - Telephone Mama (4:15)
19. New Dice - Don't Say Never (4:22)
20. Limahl - Tar Beach (3:50)
21. Beige Neige - Don't Let Me Down (3:21)

Gazebo - Telephone Mama

As always, thanks Ris! Another fav track of mine by Gazebo that would fit nicely into this set is "First" from the same 1984 album Telephone Mama! Cheers

Curiously, I know quite a few of the songs from this weeks volume, unlike usually....... :D

But my absolute favorite here must be Masquerade whose 1983 classic Guardian Angel is well-know by everyone.
This is such a deceptively simple but really wonderful track in all aspects.

Really strange that this was actually the brainchild of Drafi Deutscher, one of the longest running hit authors from Germany
with a career lasting almost 40 years......but mostly associated with easy listening music.......which could be also true in this case as well,
as it is literally "easy listening" but with a delicate synth-pop touch and a wonderful melody.
