In 1980, Mark Peters (bass guitar) and Flo Sullivan (vocals, keyboard) from Liverpool formed a band which was to become known as A Formal Sigh. The band members included Greg Milton (guitar), Roger Sinek (drums), and Robin Surtees (guitar). The band developed a sound which, after repeated airplay of a session recorded for the late John Peel, developed a small cult following in north-east England. John Peel is famously known to have declared himself "very partial" to A Formal Sigh. Sadly, the band soon disbanded.

The songs come from three studio sessions, two of which were recorded at SOS Studios in Liverpool. The Peel session was recorded at the BBC Maida Vale 4 studio. One other track was recorded during a band rehearsal, in Liverpool. The band is Post-Punk with influences rooted in early Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, and Joy Division. Flo Sullivan (vocals, keyboard) who's real name is Gayna Rose Madder went on to form the band Shiny Two Shiny.
