Here is a c̶o̶r̶r̶e̶c̶t̶e̶d̶ non-remix version of "The Instigator", the B-side of "Best Kept Secret" by China Crisis: (Mega link)

It's from a CD source (the withdrawn "Best Kept Secret" CD EP).

[edit: oops, the 7" actually did not use this mix. Oh well, enjoy anyway!]

The B-side of "Best kept secret" was "The instigator (Italian fuzzbox version)" on both 7" and 12". This is a remix (more like a backing track) exclusive for the CD single.

By the way thank you for telling me about the "When Smokey sings" 7". Will change ASAP!

Oh, shoot, you're right; the 7" did use the Italian Fuzzbox mix. Sorry about that. I got mixed up when comparing the CD's tracks to the 45s. Thanks for catching my error. I edited my reply accordingly.

Happy to help with "When Smokey Sings", at least.

Re: SHARE: 7" collections - Thompson Twins

Postby Passing_Stranger » Mon Sep 11, 2023 8:54 am

Life's sometimes like that - I planned to restart posting in January but here we are with a new installment, nine months later! Better late than never, though. I wanted to do someone different but just got sucked in with the Thompson Twins. Not the band had much time or care for until recently, but as I started to compile this collection it became clear that they're very much worth investigating! I'll do that soon, but now here's what I have from their 7" oeuvre.

Quite a few missing spot here, I'm afraid. No B-sides to "She's in love with mystery" (CD reissues are compressed to the point of unlistenability), "Nothing in common" and "Come inside", no A-side to "Revolution" 7" (what a dire choice for a cover and what a crap reworking! What were they thinking?! Oh well, for completion's sake...). If anyone has any of these in lossless, please help out. Otherwise it's complete, hope you'll enjoy it.

It's always nice to see someone else tackle Thompson Twins' singles discography...nice work!

A couple of notes...

1. She's In Love With Mystery's B-Sides, Fast Food and Food Style (actually 2 tracks) were released on the 2008 Edsel/Demon Music Group 2 CD of A Product Of... and Set.
https://www.discogs.com/release/1575343-Thompson-Twins-A-Product-Of-Participation-Set

2. Perfect Game's B-Side, Politics is slightly longer than the album version (which you've included). The 7" B-Side Version has a 2min 37sec playing time. Just when the song seems to end at 2min 21sec, it kicks back in with a last hurrah of the chorus. This version of Politics has never been released on CD or in digital format.

3. The version of Doctor! Doctor! you've included is the 3min 57sec Promo Edit found on the US Promo 7": https://www.discogs.com/release/4770890 ... tor-Doctor
The 3min 46sec playing time on the label of that promo is incorrect. To the best of my knowledge, all retail 7" singles used the 4min 39sec album version.

4. The true 3min 35sec Don't Mess With Doctor Dream 7" Version is slightly longer than what you've included, and has never been released on CD or in digital format. The 3min 26sec edit started to appear on TT compilations in the 90s, and none of the TT fans know where it came from. It cuts out Alannah's scream and instrumental bit from 0min 26sec to 0min 35sec (after the "Ow, ow, ow, ow" and before the two "Don't mess with doctor dream (s)".

5. Revolution 7" Version has never been released on CD or in digital format.

6. Nothing In Common's "piano version" B-Side, Nothing To Lose has never been released on CD or in digital format.

7. The Bombers In The Sky you've included is a slight edit from a compilation CD (Thompson Twins UK, I believe), that cuts out the roaring sound (bomber) at the very beginning before the drum beat kicks in.

8. The version of Roll Over you've included is actually the US/North American album version from Here's To Future Days (eliminated from the album in the UK and other parts of the world). The US album version is produced by Nile Rodgers and Tom Bailey. The withdrawn UK 7" Version begins with soft cymbals taps, has a playing time of 4min 55sec, and is produced by Tom and John 'Tokes' Potoker...which was released on the 2008 Edsel/Demon Music Group 2 CD of Here's To Future Days: https://www.discogs.com/release/1424833 ... uture-Days.

Some years ago, I made my own TT singles compilation, a 2 disc I titled, The Definitive Singles Collection. It wasn't made up of all true 7" Versions. Two were Promo Edits (Hold Me Now (Fade) and Doctor! Doctor!), key album tracks (If You Were Here and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire), the pre-Nile Rodgers "bells" version of King For A Day that includes the "Fools in paradise" alternate lyrics (I titled it the Withdrawn UK 7" Version, as it has appeared on many TT compilations over the years), the album edit of Come Inside (which was the US 7" Version), my album edit of The Saint, Rev T.'s Single Remix of Groove On, the four Babble singles and my edit of Babble's final track Dark Raven.

I can share my compilation if you'd like. Just be warned, the compilation is in MP3 320kbps, as I never made the full jump to FLAC.

Great work on the Numan Singles Collection Passing_Stranger.

I have a few flacs/jpgs that could help further with this collection if anyone is interested:

Firstly, I include the 1979 live version 'Me I disconnect from you' as a 'Complex' B-Side, as it featured on the Japanese 7" vinyl.

I have added two singles from 1981, 'Stormtrooper In Drag / Night Talk' (originally credited to Paul Gardiner) and 'Love needs no Disguise / Face to Face' * (originally credited to Dramatis & Gary Numan).

(*My cheat - This track was a solo 12" bonus track, I only include it here because the regular 7" B-side, 'Take me Home' contains no Numan involvement - and I really like 'Face to Face')

I have replaced the 1983 B-Sides 'My Car Slides' and 'Poetry & Power' with the fade-out single versions. From 'Warriors' and 'Sister Suprise' respectively.

I have replaced the live B-Side 'Respect' with the single remix version. From 'America'.

I have added the B-side ' Love like a Ghost' to the 1989 'I'm on Automatic' single

I have replaced the B-side 'Shame', with the original B-side mix from the 1991 'Heart' single. This is the only vinyl rip I have used, the others are from various CD's

Thank you very much for nice words and for notes and stuff. I'm not near enough completion it seems. Strange that for such a commercially successful band they're so loosely represented on CD/digital media...

I'd love to hear your compilation, even if its' in mp3 :)

Thank you! And especially for the files - immensely useful, and some are really a revelation :D

Now Numan's collection seems to be complete - after years and years of searching for stuff... Strange feeling.

Re: SHARE: 7" collections - Eurythmics

Postby PKPN » Sun Oct 22, 2023 7:11 am

Check on Eurythmics "Would I Lie to You?". The B-side, "Here Comes That Sinking Feeling", I think should not be the album version, but rather a less-polished mix that omits the synth when the drums come in, and the drums are mixed differently, among other minor differences. I don't have the UK 45 to confirm, but I found a rip purporting to be of the US 45, and that's what it has on it. The UK 12" also has that mix. If DjPaulT's rips are accurate, the US 12" uses the album version.

Here Comes That Sinking Feeling is indeed much rougher on the 7 and 12 Inch. The drums sound almost like a gated reverb was used, the horns are much more prominent in the mix and the vocals are a bit louder. Halfway there is also kind of a twangy guitar coming in for a few seconds. I do prefer the more polished Album Version though. It is one of my favourite Eurythmics tracks.

edit: noticed I forgot to add the link. This is a rip of the 7 inch in flac.

Re: SHARE: 7" collections - FoxxVox & Midge Ure

Postby Passing_Stranger » Mon Apr 15, 2024 11:02 am

Hi guys! The promised new entries are here, it's both additions/corrections and new stuff. First of all, in light of Chris Cross's lamented passing I updated the Ultravox folder, finally including all singles from the 1970s. There you can find Tiger Lily release, UK FoxxVox singles (all six of them) and West German 7" of "Frozen ones". Plus I also added West German B-side to "We came to dance" folder and re-tagged it accordingly, you may want to redownload. All this bliss is here: https://mega.nz/folder/qpMkCYZA#A3PtwUnMJ-l960lTGAu_2Q

Next, having already featured John Foxx, I finally created a folder for his successor in the band. Midge Ure is likely my favourite "New Wave" singer (and also, what magnificent instrumentals he has written!) so I really had to feature him much earlier (not least because his discography is relatively straightforward and well-represented digitally) but, well, better late than never. Go fetch his solo works here: https://mega.nz/folder/W5dnkahK#-iQwd7bW-0p-U54AD-DSbw

Enjoy!

P.S. For those who may be interested, here's the file of their chart successes around the world that I've compiled not long ago: https://chart-collector.blogspot.com/20 ... midge.html

Fabulous to listen to the John Foxx era Ultravox, I rate the album "Systems Of Romance" as one of my all time top 10 favourite albums, nice to read through the chart history you have put together.

Excellent work all round, so thank you.

This page is fantastic. Thank you PS for your dedication.

A couple of points - not criticisms at all, just additional info.

One little Numan thing. My Car Slides 1 seven-inch fades out as the bass drum is going and you can just hear the car revving up at the end. The version you have been given fades out too early. I don't have my vinyl any more but maybe I can whip you a .flac up from the Warriors original CD. I will try. O yes, One little other thing. Puppets did not fade out on the seven inch single of I Still Remember that I had. It was the same as the twelve-inch.

An OMD point. There is a version of Never Turn Away exclusive to the seven-inch picture disc. It runs approx 4.27 and has a different synth line at the end. I have only got a poor quality mp3 of it (PM me if you'd like it but it IS poor quality) but it is a really, really good version of the song. Just though I would mention in case you (or anyone else here) have never heard it.

Thank you once again for all these. It is really very special.
