Request: Boxcar "Gast Stop" Canada 4trk CDS

Postby Fred Taghon » Thu Oct 27, 2022 6:29 pm

Hoping someone out there can help me with a WAV, AIFF or FLAC rip of the Canada (Nettwerk/Volition) 4trk CD-single of Boxcar's "Gas Stop (Who Do You Think You Are)" from 1990.

https://www.discogs.com/release/2627253 ... nk-You-Are

I recently bought this CD on eBay but it won't rip accurately. Surprisingly, the disc seems to play, but when I try getting an accurate rip using XLD (Mac's equivalent of Exact Audio Copy) it takes FOREVER to rip and ends up with tons of errors for every track.

I tried polishing out the very small amount of surface scratches on the data side, but that didn't help. I think the data itself is going "bad". Holding the disc up to a light, I can see there are a few tiny "holes" which indicates "CD rot".

If possible, a rip via XLD or Exact Audio Copy would be super appreciated (in WAV, AIFF or FLAC format)!

Thanks for taking the time to read my request!

Do you only want the Canada version, or is another version fine as well? I'm not sure if I have it with file logs, but I definitely have one of the maxisingles.

Thanks for the reply! I'm specifically looking for the Canadian 4trk.

I was finally able to purchase the Australian 5trk CDS a couple years ago. Yeah, I know, THAT version DOES have the 4 tracks that are on the Canadian CD, which is why this isn't a life or death situation by any means lol. But I'm trying to complete my Boxcar physical CD collection, so while I now have the CD, it's defective and that's just a bummer.

I've had a lossless rip of the Canadian disc for many years but only recently checked it against the AccurateRip database and all tracks came up as not accurate, so I was hoping to get a fresh rip from someone who actually has the physical CD to ensure it's accuracy.

Yes, unfortunately, I do not have the Canada version, but a version with 5 tracks on it. Sorry about that!

And you have just discovered the curse of Disque Americ!

It's frustrating because it only happens to some Disque Americ / Americ Disc pressings and it shows no signs. Like you said, it will play okay, but when you try a secure rip, it is only then that the rot rears its ugly head.

The latest release I have that suffers the Disque Americ rot is from 1989 (Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, The Symphony Sessions). I think I bought four copies, used, before I found one that ripped without errors. One copy sounded like I was listening to a barely-tuned radio station.

I think Capitol Records was Disque Americ's biggest client, so Nettwerk would have fallen into the Capitol umbrella until mid-90s. If you're lucky, there will be a Columbia House distribution of the CD, which were usually Cinram or DADC/Sony (no problems with either), but Nettwerk releases were usually not so lucky.

(Capitol originally used Praxis to press their CDs, who were then bought out by Cinram in 1988. Once that contract was up, Capitol switched to Disque Americ around 1989.)

PolyGram (e.g., New Order) used Disque Americ for a few years, until switching to Cinram in the early 90s.

Wax Trax! used Disque Americ in the early 90s, as well.

And sorry, I don't have this CD single. Would love to find it, though!

Thanks for the info obs, I wasn't aware of the potential issues with that particular CD manufacturer. I've run into a few CD rot cases in the past few years but this is only the 3rd time it's been so bad I couldn't get an accurate rip.

And thanks also, negative1, I can certainly buy another copy, though having just sprung for this faulty copy, I'm not sure I wanna keep throwing money at it if there's a good chance other copies are in the same state of decay.

As I mentioned, I do have the Australian 5trk version so this isn't an absolute necessity. At least now I do, technically, have the Canadian CD iny collection, even if it may end up unplayable a few years down the road lol.

Thanks again for the efforts and info, I do appreciate it!!!

Moev's Head/Down, I bought three or four copies (Disque Americ) before giving up and ordering a US Atlantic (pressed by SRC) release. I would advise paying too much for another copy of Boxcar.
