Well, it's almost Christmas time, so I thought I'd share a full cd's worth of songs for peoples' enjoyment. I've included a few of my all-time favorites, so I hope people enjoy them.
Bay of Pigs: Wife Swapping in Grenada Beach (1984, on a selftitled/self-released EP)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>
This is good synthy, arty new wave with some weird vocals that sound like a sinister Mark Mothersbaugh.
Calculated X: Dream Affair (Four Windows EP, 1982, X-Tracked Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>
This is a perfect combination of great guitar riffs and synths. This is my favorite song on this EP, but the others are great too. Check out the Calculated X thread for another song by them
Fatal Charm: Spend the Night Alone (Lucille 12", 1987, Native Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>People loved the Fatal Charm track I shared last week, so here's another. It's a bit different, but I think it's simply one of the greatest powerpop songs ever.
45 Grave: Riboflavin Flaavored Non-Carbonated Polyunsaturated Blood (1980, from the LA Free Music Society compilation "Darker, Stalker")
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>Here's the very first recorded song by these deathrock greats. It's quirky, weird, and quite catchy despite the absurd chorus.
Boyd Rice and Daniel Miller: Cleanliness and Order (1980, from the Darker Stalker comp)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>This is a rare one-off song that resulted as a collaboration of Boyd Rice (from Non) and Daniel Miller (The Normal, Silicon Teens, Depeche Mode producer)
Count Past Five: Underwater Christmass (from a 1987 7" on Epithet Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>Here's the obligatory Christmas song! It's a catchy mod ditty that kicks the ass of We Three Kings!
Blue Nose B: Forever Passing Trains (Forever Passin Trains EP, 1985, Blue Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>This song is a bit loud, sorry. It's great 80s indie rock, though. So that makes it tolerable!
Beautiful Pea Green Boat: The Powerhouse (Obsessions mLP, 1987, Mr Slaughterbacks/Third Mind Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>Here's a mesmerizing synthpop gem. It's a LOT like early Xymox, but with dreamy female vocals.
For Against: It's a Lie (Echelons LP, 1986, Independent Projects Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>I've seen a few other people mention these guys on this board. They have consistently released incredible records for 20 years, and their latest record from a few years ago was the top album of the year in Big Takeover Magazine!
Carcrash International: Fall (Fragments from a Journal in Hell LP, 1992, Cleopatra Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>I rarely put songs from the 90s up here, but these guys are excellent, with a rather heavy Joy Division/Sisters of Mercy influence going on.
IfThenWhy: Counter Circular (Graduation EP, 1983, Dangerous Rhythm Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>This is some great 80s college/indie rock with a post-punk edge.
Shiny Two Shiny: Through the Glass (Halfway Across the Rainbow LP, 1983, Red Flame Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>This is a cross between minimal synthpop and twee. It's mix of synth-ness and wussiness is unbeatable!
Factual: Psychotic Romance (Psychotic Romance EP, 1983, Faction Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>The vocals are kinda iffy at times, but overall this is an incredible synthpop song!
Die Unbekannten: Perfect Love (S/T EP, 1981, Monogram Schallplatten Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>This is a classic Neue Deutsche Welle/minimal electronic song. It's somber and captivating and beautiful... if you can find a copy of their recently-released limited-edition album "Don't Tell Me Stories", which compiles all their songs, buy it!
Adolphsen-Falk: Kroppens Automatik (Med Rymden I Blodet LP, 1982, Air Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>Scandinavian synthpop, anyone? This song is quirkier than most of their songs, and the fact that it's not in English bubt you still want to sing along really adds to its charm.
Ceramic Hello: Gestures (The Absence of a Canary LP, 1981, Mannequin Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>This is my favorite song from the quintessential minimal synth album. It's new wave stripped bare, and is hauntingly frail.
Now we get to my current favorites:
Moloko+: Falling Apart (S/T LP, 1986, self-released)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>How a DIY self-released German album found its way to a SF record store, I have no idea... but I can NOT stop listening to this incredible album. Every song is a synthy, wave-y masterpiece. Just listen to the primitive synth lines on this song, and tell me they aren't great. In fact, here's a bonus song from that album:
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>Share the wealth, that's what I say!
Lowlife: Swing (Swirl It Swings EP, 1987, Nightshift Records)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>Sad Lovers and Giants: Clint (Epic Garden Music LP, 1982, Midnight Music)
<<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>>>If there's anything that I can turn people on to, I hope it's these two bands. Lowlife created the mosst gorgeous dreampop ever, sounding like a cross between early Cocteau Twins and Joy Division (with some New Order-esque basslines, courtesy of original Cocteau Twins bassist Will Hedgie, who left that group to help form Lowlife). Sad Lovers and Giants - especially on their early releases - were the perfect postpunk band. Just listen to the song Clint - the lyrics, the vocals, the swirling synths, the main keyboard line, the great guitars, and even the final repeating of "goodbye" at the end are absolutely brilliant!
Lowlife are releasing much of their back-catalogue on cd in 2006 (see the "Reissues" forum). If you like Swing, I guarantee that you will love the rest of their songs - they are all similar in style and quality. Hopefully SLAG (they chose their name specifically for that acronym) rerelease their stuff too. I hope you enjoy those two songs, if nothing else!
Anyway, let me know what you all think!
