New Wave video dvd on ebay

SomebodySomewhere, If you get a chance, could you let me know if you recorded Mi Sex "Castaway", Models "Evolution", or Passion Puppets "Like Dust" from the A to Z mararthon. Those are a few videos that I missed and would love to see. -Michael

"Castaway," yeah. I don't know about the other two. They showed "Like Dust?" I'll try to check this week. I have 5 Mi-Sex promos -- "Castaway," "Only Thinking," "Blue Day," "But You Don't Care" and "Computer Games" (the latter of which is, appropriately enough, on my computer). I'm sure they made more than that -- they had 15 singles in Australasia -- but I haven't tracked down copies of the others. Epic released very few of those 15 in the U.S., and MTV barely played what they did release.

In all candor, I'm not a very good trader, so I don't think that'd be a good idea right now, but if I can figure out why my vidc(r)ap card's VCR function is being such a pain in the ass, I'd be happy to copy them and stick 'em on rapidshare or yousendit. I've been working on the settings on this POS for a month now, and I don't know how to change it. It's taking 1.33:1 recordings and faux widescreening them to 1.78... and I'm not getting any sound. You know anyone who's familiar with StudioPC?

Wait, so MTV-2 played all 31 of those? I'm gonna have to take a refresher course on the ones I couldn't remember!

It's great to find someone who knows anything about Mi Sex. I loved that band and only have the Computer Games and Only Thinking videos. I knew they must have had some other videos, but MTV only played Castaway and Only Thinking during their marathon. I have never seen Blue Day or But You Don't Care. As far as the videos they did play, yes all the ones on that DVD were played because, I recorded them off of the marathon. If you would like I could email you the whole list of "all the videos" on their list to be played. Of course you know that many that were on the list never got played. Just like that "Blue Fun" that you were kind enough to identify for me that was labled as Do Re Mi's "Guns and Butter". There were so many other Australian bands that I know have more videos than what were played. Only were played 2 by Dragon, yet I know they have a video for Body and The Beat. The Models have a video for Barbados that has never been shown in the US. Since you are familiar with what Mi Sex released, do you know what videos bands like Models, Dragon, Machinations, Uncanny X Men, Australian Crawl, Mondo Rock, etc have. While I have as many as I can find, I am sure there are more that I am not aware of that exist. Let me know if you want that list. You will have to sift through a bunch of junk, but there are a lot of gems still in the list

I'm guessing at least half this forum knows anything about them, since their songs have been featured on a lot of the Name That Tune games.

The only one I ever saw (and taped) back in the day was "Only Thinking" -- and even that only seemed to show up after hours. Epic just wasn't very supportive in the U.S. -- even though they managed to put together a far more appealing version of "Where Do They Go?" than the one that hit the shelves down under.

"Blue Day" is... well, it's blue. The band performs in a dark, blue room. No concept or anything. "But You Don't Care" has a chess theme -- the guys stand on a giant chess board. In one shot, Steve Gilpin is singing next to, I think, a giant rook or horse -- which was, like, taller than he was!

My buddy once joked that every time Jancee Dunn started laughing, 10 videos had to be dropped. (Take a guess what genre all the dropped videos just conveniently happened to be in.) I mean, it wasn't the end of the world most of the time because of the bug and all, but there were some that I really wanted a copy of and when they didn't get on the air, I figured that was it, I'd never get them. Turns out, I was later able to get VH1 Classic to play some of them. But even they claim they don't know where the hell some of them are anymore. Plus, I've heard there are quite a few -- such as INXS' "Good Times" and Romeo Void's "Chinatown" -- which they don't have the rights to run anymore. I really don't understand how that happens. But since "Good Times" never seems to make it to any of INXS' 2000 music video releases -- never mind any of the "Lost Boys" DVDs -- I'm guessing there's some validity to it.

I'm not a Models, Dragon or Uncanny X Men expert. The only Dragon video I can even remember is "Rain," which I'm guessing they did show.

Machinations had 3 I can remember. "Pressure Sway," which was animated with stick figure drawings against a black background. "No Say in It" -- the only song of theirs I liked -- which had the band performing on a stage and looking vaguely 1940s. And "You Got Me Going Again," in which the band plays on a spinning globe while animated something-or-others (meteors or stars or something) fly across the screen. After blowing that last one on a recent NTT game, rest assured I'll never forget it again.

Australian Crawl had a music video compilation released down under, which I've got lying around here somewhere (albeit with no way to play right now). Videos for "The Boys Light Up," "Errol," "Shut Down," "Reckless," "Downhearted," "Things Don't Seem" and a couple others are on there.

I would give my left testicle for a Mondo Rock music video DVD compilation. I have 4, I'm planning to buy a DVD to get a fifth, and they probably have at least 20. You know, man, who knows. The American record labels were not kind to them. Hell, Ross Wilson's wife had an American record deal when he didn't.

Thanks for the list, but I just realized somebody apparently put it online here: classic_music_fans.tripod.com. And, no, they didn't show Robin Lane & The Chartbusters' "When Things Go Wrong." They had a Ramones video stuck in its case. Talk about things going wrong. I practically cried over that one.

Off to check on "Evolution" and "Like Dust"...

I have the 3 Machinations you listed, and they showed Dragon's Rain and then Speak No Evil (when they were called Hunter in the US. As for Mondo Rock, I probably have the same ones you do: Summer of 81, Cool World, Primitive Love Rites. I don't have Come Said The Boy which is on that recently DVD release that also has Dear Enemy's Computer One and Uncanny X Men's Everybody Wants to Work. (All videos I do not have).
For Australian Crawl, MTV2 played Boys Light Up and Shut Down. I am sharing files of Errol, Restless, Downhearted, Boys Light Up, and Things Don't Seem on the HUB. I also have crappy version of INXS/J Barnes Good Times that I am sharing also. I would love to see that Australian Crawl commercial release. I found someone recently who will convert PAL tapes over to DVD for me. Would love to see the other Mi Sex videos. That was a great band. Probably one of the few bands that I can honestly say I love all their songs. Well, all except "Down The Line (Making Love on the Telephone" Other than that, to me everyone song is GREAT. I know you said that you are not a big trader, but if you are ever up for it let me know. I could also send you the list of what I recorded on the other DVDs. The one that was put on Ebay that you "reviewed" was only volume 1. There are 4 discs with a minimum of 30 videos on each of rare new wave songs from that era.

"Catsaway" -- excuse me, "Castaway" -- and "Evolution" are there. No "Like Dust." Jancee must have had a laughing fit that day. "Castaway" is memorable in that it's probably the first music video in history where the lead singer flips the camera the bird. (Steve, you cheeky git.)

The Dear Enemy (or as I used to call them, that band with the blonde Bob Geldof) video was nothing special, and those are the Mondo Rock ones I've got. And "Come Said the Boy" -- I was furious when MTV-2 ran the live clip instead of the real thing.

Another good Australasian "band" whose video MTV-2 lost was Monte Video and the Cassettes' "Shoop Shoop Diddy Wop... whatever the hell it was called." I wonder if I have that one on tape.

If you have all those, you pretty much have them all. I think the only other one was "Beautiful People." I don't really remember what any of these looked like, except they were all pretty no-frills.

I used to be able to. Then my POS all-format VCR bit the dust. I've still got it here. Maybe one of these days I'll get it fixed. Granted, it was one of those all-in-one deals with the converters built right in. Suffice to say, they don't do a very good job going from PAL to NTSC.

I loved most of their singles -- particularly the ones they did from '82-'84. Unlike most bands who lost their audience, they hit their peak after people stopped listening. The only ones I thought were kind of weak were the two on "Shanghaied!" that stiffed.

I'd very much like to get those 2 vidcapped, so if I can find somebody who knows how to troubleshoot StudioPC, I can get to work on that for you.

Thanks so much for posting the Australian Crawl/James Reyne info! I had no idea they had that many videos. Are you sure it is not available? I did a Google search for it and found a place in Australia claiming to have it in stock and selling it. Only problem was that they are advertising a Region 4 PAL DVD, which I can not play. DOES ANYONE ON HERE HAVE A COPY?

It's the same thing as that other 2 DVD collection from the 80s that someone was nice enough to post the link on this site. I would love it for the Models, Uncanny X Men, Dear Enemy, Mondo Rock videos, etc but a PAL format is useless to me.

SomebodySomewhere, thanks for posting the screen shots of the Mi Sex and Models videos. I must get those somehow.

As for Jancee Dunn, I bought a large C Band satellite dish when M2 came out in Sept of 96. So I had M2 from the beginning, and let me me tell you, in the early days, she screwed up so many times !!! Back then there were no production values, because only those with a large dish could watch the channel anyway. She used to screw up, and then stop and ask her producer if she can start again right on line. They would keep telling her to just go on and finish the segment. It was hilarious and it happened all the time. God I missed the original M2. Wide open play list, heavy influence of current British bands and 80s videos, no commercials, and no RAP. That channel introduced me to a lot of Brit Pop music back in 96.
Original VJs were Matt Pinfiel, Jancee Dunn, and Kris Kosach. Lewis Largent would fill on at times also. No one ever remembers Kris Kosach.

I feel as I should own up to what I did, it was me who had traded with Mike and it was me who had sold that DVD on eBay. Mike is not a bad person whatsoever nor did I have anything against him to make me sell the DVD, it was simply to make a few dollars.
