Animation

Postby beatschool » Mon Jun 05, 2006 8:14 am

Howdy -

As someone that didn't get to have cable TV as a kid, I missed out on MTV and seeing a lot of music vids, so I'm asking for a little help. Can anyone point me to specific examples of animation in early 80s music videos? The most obvious example is "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel. I know the collective brain of the NWO can come up with more.

Thanks.

DOH! THEE example I guess! Telex's Moskow Discow and New Order's original Blue Monday videos ('83 version, not the '87 redo) make use of a lot of dated computer imagery which perfectly date their place in time...that's kinda cool.

The remix version of Moscow Discow that is; the normal version is, well normal. And much better. And available on the hub!

Gary Numan's "Complex" video did the rotoscope thing five years before a-ha. Also, a-ha's "Train of Thought" is completely rotoscoped, and a nice video companion to "Take On Me".

Elvis Costello's "Accidents Will Happen" was animated, I believe. I'm thinking that Icehouse's "We Can Get Together" was animated in a similar style, but I could be very wrong about that.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. A friend of mine is teaching a couple of stop-motion animation classes this summer and wanted to have a themed camp that went back to the 80s for inspiration. He'll be real grateful.

How to Be A Millionaire by ABC was animated. Or, were you looking for stop-motion animation?
