Nun With a Gun

Someone has to be able to help me with this. Over the weekend, I bought a bunch of records, including an excellent synth album by a completely unknown artist. The record came in a plain sleeve with no artist info, not even on the label. It has a track listing, but searches on google, yahoo, allmusic, and even cddb have turned up nothing. The tracks on the record are Nun With a Gun, Changing My Mind, Sleep, Anything, Bad Dream #7, What is the Problem, Surveillance, Lumps, Square Dance, Remember Falling in Love. I also put a couple songs on yousendit.com, so if anyone recorgnizes them, please let me know!

Sounds like it's a test pressing. Is there any lable/pressing info that came wit hit? If so you could call the label/pressing plant, give them the number of the record and they could look it up and tell you who it is.

If you find out the artist, could you post it here. I'd be interested. Does the record have a matrix number in the lead out groove? If so, what is it?

One one side (with a black label and white writing), the matrix says "RR-1917-A", "FP V-49842-1", "329-4", "kdisc" followed by what looks like "JQ", and finally "OM NA MA KALIKA". The other side (with a white label with black writing, it is much the same, except it's "B" instead of "A", and "OM NA MA SHIVAYA" I've tried googling all of these, but to no avail...

In looking around, I've found a bit of info for you. "kdisc" refers to Kdisc Mastering. From what I've been able to find out they were one of the larger mastering outfits. I haven't been able to find a website for them, and from what I've read, it sounds like they no longer exist.

However, you can try contacting John Golden at Golden Mastering:

He used to work at Kdisc Mastering, he might be able to help with info on the matrix numbers.

In the meantime, I'll keep poking around.


BTW: both songs are great, esp. the Falling in Love number.

I think KDisc used to be based here in Minneapolis, but I may be mistaken.

From what I've read, they were located in a few places, including L.A.

I hope he replies! Are the rest of the songs on a par with the two you've posted, because they are absolutely infectious.

I'd kill to get a copy of that lp.

Yeah, the other songs are great too. There are a couple somewhat beatless instrumental synth songs, and the rest are more synthpop/new wave. I'll try to get the rest of the album on yousendit.com and the hub this evening.

I just got a really thorough reply from John Golden.


[b] I would guess you have a test pressing , otherwise known as a "white label" since you don't know the artist name. Keysor Century (the pressing plant) generally would not write the artist name on the test label.
The matrix number RR-1917 would be the record company number. FP means 'full protection', meaning that the lacquer was plated with a 3-step process , the V- number is the internal plant number for identification of the metal pressing parts (metal master, mother and stamper). I have no idea what the 329-4 means. The JQ is most likely my initials if you look closely it should read JG, although there could of been someone else who cut it with the JQ initial but I don't know of any employee with those initials when I worked at Kdisc -Hollywood (12 years). The pressing plant was in Saugus,Ca. It's still there , but they closed the pressing plant about 14 years ago. They still manufacture raw vinyl compound used to make vinyl records (their main business).
From the inscription , It could be a Hawaiian artist....???? The titles don't ring a bell with me, except Nun With A Gun", that's a hard one to forget..... Sorry , I stopped counting how many records I have mastered at 12,000 and I just can't remember everything about each one. I am currently still doing 2 a day.
Don't try to phone or email the plant , believe me, they have no employees left who worked there during the pressing years. ALL documentation regarding previous records pressed or clients have long ago been put in a landfill...along with THOUSANDS of master tapes that no one wanted. What a shame....

Not by putting the record up for sale, but by putting up an "auction" using a keyword-filled title like "RAREST unknown minimal synth coldwave post-punk new Wave LP" which I asked for the artist, and gave links to all the songs for people to download, and tell them to contact me if they know the artist.

If you're going to eBay, klumpa, minimalandy, frank-bruno or eruscubo (not sure of that one) are 3 of the larger buyers/sellers of minimal synth there. If I think of any others I'll post them.

At least we know that RR-1917 is the record company number, that could be a bit of a lead, but in looking at the inscriptions, I'd say they are both meditation mantras. It should be spelled "om namah shivaya".

Yeah, those eBayers are all people who I've sold records to. There's also super80boy, vita-noctis, universewoman, stephane9, yekserves, orlandomaniac... a whole bunch more; perhaps one of them could help. Anyway, I have the entire album uploaded on the hub as well as on yousendit (along with slightly cleaned up versions of the fisrt two songs posted:
