I'm pretty sure he's the one who did this particular track which might have been a Bob Marley cover that I heard a few times on WLIR back in the late 80's(?).

I recall it has a much different (faster) non reggae cadence than the original.

On an odd note, I also remember the chorus 'Aye, yay, Yo..' kinda sounding like that old Bananna Splits theme, go figure..

I checked some discography lists and it doesn't come up on any so far, perhaps it was some kind of white label tribute demo track or non LP B-side?

Anyone else remember / have this or am I just imagining things?

Pretty sure it's not.. (Definitely not the version you cited.. thanx for checking)

I recall now that the artist ID'd was Eddy Grant and it sounded distinctly like him rather than a remix of Bob Marley's original.

I'm pretty sure you are referring to track #8 on the second disc of the deluxe edition of Marley's Legend. It does sound a bit like Eddy Grant, but it is indeed Bob. This Deluxe Edition includes a second disc that's all original and rare 12" mixes--a lot of them by 80's uber-mixer john Luongo. Check it out, I think you'll find what you're looking for.

After checking the GEMM listings, there is only one song in the Eddy Grant catalog that bears any resemblance to the name 'Buffalo Soldier'

Perhaps it is the title track to his 1990 OOP release 'Barefoot Soldier'.

Go to Amazon.com, go to Bob Marley Legend Deluxe Edition, then sample track 8 on disc 2! I think you'll find exactly what you're looking for. You're really taking the long way around the block. I'm very familiar with--and have a lot of--both Bob's and Eddy's catalog and Barefoot Soldier sounds nothing like Marley. Their styles are really very different.

I must have my wires crossed with another unnamed tune but I'm holding fast to it being sung by Eddy Grant.

WLIR definitely played the remix of Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier" as an alternative every so often. It has exactly the Banana Splits-like refrain you describe (which Bob specifically recorded for the Eric "ET" Thorngren remix).

The vinyl version of "Legend" contained the REMIX of "Buffalo Soldier," not the ORIGINAL version. But when the CD was first released, it contained the ORIGINAL version, not the REMIX. The Deluxe Edition, thankfully, contains both.

I always dug the remix (though many consider it sacrilege!)

Yup. I can remember having bought the vinyl and hearing the ET remix, then being "disappointed" when I bought the cd, with the much more downbeat original version.

Yes many do consider that version of Buffalo Soldier to be "sacrilige", but I've always thought it the best. Retro, as soon as you mentioned Banana-Splits I knew precisely what you were referring to. I hope your search is finaly over. Isn't that the best feeling, hearing a song that you haven't heard for years but never forgot? Well, that and finally letting loose after holding your wee wee on a long road trip...

Funny, after hearing the remixed version you sent, I still have this nagging feeling that there is another (cover) version out there. I will continue to troll the internet for any evidence of that.

Here's a little story to show how far back I remember things.

I just bought this DVD containing a 'Lost' episode of a beloved childhood 60's Anime cartoon 'Little Kimba' (The White Lion).
For many years I (& others unknown to me) knew that there was another version of the original broadcast episode but with a different voiceover and (toned down) dialogue. Sure enough, I happened upon <a href="http://kimba.tvheaven.com/" target="blank">a website</a> set up by an individual who had restored it from an audio tape made by someone who managed to record the original broadcast version.

Call me obsessive or delusional but that's the way I feel about this particular tune!

Wow, if it's nagging at you this much try contacting the radio station to see who the DJ was at that time. I'm sure he or she is still working but perhaps at another radio station. If you track them down they will most surely be able to guide you in the right direction of this elusive song...Just be sure to ausuage them that all your prior stalking charged were indeed dropped!
