This is from a tape an old friend of mine dug up. It's been stumping me for some time now. I think the song came out in 1984 or possibly '83. You can get a short sample here:

http://www.spiritofradio.ca/SongSearch/1076.mp3

or a longer and slightly higher quality one here:

http://www.geocities.com/cjmratings/stuff/song9.mp3

If you have trouble getting the longer sample let me know and I will gladly email you.

The chorus goes:

I've got news for ya baby
I'm breakin' through
I've got news for ya baby
On to something new
I've got news for ya baby
It's time I made my own rules
(or maybe "This time I make my own rules")

The song's got to be called "Make My Own Rules" or "I've Got News for You Baby" or something like that.

The song was put on a tape by a DJ at the new wave station in Salt Lake City about 1984. I've contacted the guy who made the tape and he says he has no idea.

Anyone have any ideas on where to turn?

The band is The Ascenders, and the song was indeed called "Make My Own Rules."

Thanks, Sombody! AMG lists two albums by the Ascenders - "The Ascenders" (1980) and "Alpha" (1983). I'm guessing this song is from the '83 album. Nothing on them from Trouser Press. GEMM.com has several copies of "The Ascenders" for sale, but no "Alpha". Anyone know anything about this band?

Thanks 8-6! I just bought it. Any volunteers to digitize it for me? No turntable. [:(]

If you can't find anyone closer, drop me a line, I'd be happy to do it for you.

They were from California (LA or San Diego or somewhere around there). That's pretty much all I know. I'm not familiar with "Alpha," but the self-titled EP erroneously listed with a 1980 date on AMG came out in 1983. AMG does have the quartet's names correct.

http://www.chesterfieldblues.com/ is the website for Kerry Chester's current band, so I'm sure he can tell you more than I can.

Thanks for the generous offer waukena. You should give it to someone who'd use it more than I would. I have a very small vinyl collection which I've duplicated digitally.

SomebodySomewhere: I suspect that AMG put the 1983 album "Alpha" by Asia (Asia is close to the Ascenders in the alphabet) in the Ascenders' entry by mistake. Everthing I've seen (GEMM & other vinyl sellers) only has the 1983 self-titled EP.

Thanks again everyone.
