Looking for a particular song

I am looking for a particular song. It features a syntesizer main theme (very known) and starts with the lyrics (approximately, sorry !) "It's getting dark, ...., I put down the receiver" (?). It's a very famous new wave song, but I don't know the title and band. Very peculiar about this song, is the fact that the synth theme keeps recurring and is interchanged with more or less "spoken word" lyrics. The synth theme sounds a bit like it was from gary numan's "are friends electric".
