Ok, I know I'm gonna feel like a total dork, but I'll ask anyway. I heard this for the first time in ages at my local purveyor of fine foods (Subway) this evening. It's a classic disco/club song from, I think, the late 70's and the refrain sounds like "Trampoline" with a slow build to "da-daa-daaa tram-po-line hey hey, tram-po-line." It could just as esily be Tamborine or maybe some foreign language (Ma Moline). Anyone got a clue? It's bugging the crap out of me.

I wouldn't call it disco, but Julian Cope has a song Trampolene.

I'd guess La Flavour's "Mandolay," but a description like this could probably fit approximately 5000 late '70s disco/club songs.

Forget the trampolines, tamborines and ma molines (whatever the HELL that is)... it's MAN-DO-LAY!

It apparently reached #7 in the Billboard charts.

It was popular enough that it was played in the clubs I went to up until about 87 or 88. That's some mighty strong staying power for a disco song!

It's a great song though - it's one of those that's instantly recognizable. It always seemed to be playing at some point in the background. When I finally re-discovered it I wondered why it hadn't already been a part of my collection.

Well, I checked AMG and in 1980 it hit #7 on Billboard's Club Play Singles chart. But the story doesn't end there... it reappeared again in 1987 in the Hot Dance Music / Maxi-Singles Sales chart.

So, it's definately an 80's tune! Back "on topic"... sweet. [8D]

Dave, you're lucky you said "My Moline," because there's no way I would have gotten it from "Trampoline!"

I actually have their album. It didn't chart, but the third single, "Only the Lonely (Have a Reason to Be Sad)," made the Hot 100. It also made the R&B Top 100, as did an earlier single, "When the Whistle Blows (Anything Goes)." "Mandolay" didn't make either. Listen to the album, and trust me, you won't be remembering the charted singles ten minutes after.

Appropriately enough, "Mandolay" was written and arranged by Mark Avsec (of Donnie Iris and Cellarful of Noise fame). So it's kinda on topic. Avsec wrote most of the album, actually.
