Vinyl (and Tape) Transfers to Digital For Everyone

This is an idea that I had a year ago, but back then I didn't have the time. money, commitment or space to pull it off.
It will start off with PCs only but I soon hope to include very detailed info on Mac-Tels/OS 10+ too.
Power PCs are at the end of life cycle, so I likely will not be devoting anything to that end of the market.
It's dying and will be completely gone in 18 months (IMHO).

Essentually, it will be a step-by-step tutorial from beginning to end; vinyl/tape to WAVE and even quality MP3 encoding.
There are existing sites out there, but they are filled with inaccurate and woefully-outdated (last update for a page I recently visited was in 2000).

The key part is that it will be a blog/WIKI/software reviews/discussion board (very small technical area for trading ideas)/ and finally a "deals and steals" section from reputable on-line merchants to acquire the hardware you need to get the job done right.
It will also be organized according to you budget.
We all have separate needs and sometimes they will be dictated by how much we have to devote to this project.
Maybe I'll throw in a video blog too for both my self and others to really make some aspect as clear as possible.
I will even spend some tutorial time on getting some user programs to work correctly.

If YOU have a better or just different way of doing things, I REALLY want to hear about them with no regard to the fact that your idea may very well be better than my origional guide.
I will use what works!
I will update and give you credit for your work.

I feel that I owe so much to Mike P (by way of his re exposure to me of NW music) that I wanted to give something back that would be usefully and practical.

I also want to do some hardware tests that are relevant to the equipment and I will categories things according to quality and budget.

Anyways, that is all for now but I VERY open to suggestions if anyone out there sees some better thing to do.

Most sites these days try to really do things on the cheap and I wanted to avoid that but also keep in mind that all of us are on a bud get of some sorts.

Restrictions: There are always restrictions with thees things.
I will not knowing anything that may impact "Perfect copy business. He provides a great service and I want him around for a long time.
Also, the music will be limited to anything offered more than 20 years ago that is NOT available on CDs (or anticipated to be released soon}

There will be a hub feature (but not immediately), and that will be locked down through anonymous IP masking but will only be accessible to "trusted members". Everyone here will know whom a "trusted member he is".

As anyways MikeP, If it is all OK with you, I will link back heavily to your NWO site.

PS: MikeP, if this is what you do not with to see posted here, please feel free to remove or edit anything you little heart desires.

PPS: Have you been receiving any of my update E-Mails on the cassette project?
It is MUCH more difficult than I anticipated.
I really want to return some sparkle and get rid of some "mud" as well.

:)

marie3, that's OK, I didn't really understand everything I wrote either. [;)]

Hiya Eight6!

Seriously, this is something that has been near and dear to my heart for a while, but not until recently did I feel I was good enough at it to share much of what I know (I didn't want to give out bad information). I also had to take a several month break from doing that kinda stuff.
Now, I think I know enough and I once again have the time to do something with this idea. [:D]

Also, the cost of decent audio recording/processing software was a show-stopper for most people. I tried damn near all of them out there (some free some not) and I kept coming back to Adobe Audition 2.0.
The up-side is that it works better, has scads of third party plug-ins and filters, and gives fantastic results.
The down-side is that is looks so damn complex and intimidating that most people run screaming into the night when they see it in its full glory.
The other downside was the cost, $349 (academic pricing is less than half that). [:0]

It looks like that may change with a new Adobe product on the horizon called Adobe "Soundbooth".
You can get the beta version here for free.
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/soundbooth/

I have messed around with it and it seems, even in its beta-stage, to work just fine.
In essence, it's a stripped down Audition 2.0 (but keeps all of the features that most vinyl to digital folks will care about. "Adobe Soundbooth" is MUCH easier for the normal person to actually use and is expected to retail for a lot less, even though the final price has yet to be determined, so I may be wrong on that last part.

OK, that's all for now, and I have some cassette cleanup work to do, so I will bid you adieu until next time.

This sounds marvelous Jimbo. I have more than a few vinyl pieces I want to transfer to a digital format. The layman's approach has the most appeal since after all, I have to balance a personal hobby with other commitments. Maybe by the time you have the Mac setup perfected I'll be in a position to dedicate the time to it. Keep us in the loop.
