I always think of The Ocean Blue's "Between Something and Nothing" as the Last Great New Wave Song...it was released in 1989 (same year as "The Promise" by When In Rome, which also contends for the title...I think of both in the same way).

The term, New Wave, was passé by 1984, but I still hear the echoes in more modern music. "Just a Girl" by No Doubt, "Basket Case" by Green Day, and "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger tapped that vein beautifully.

I may just cry thinking of how killer that era of tunes was, and naturally it's demise... I think 1986 was about it for "True" New Wave, 1984 being the last year it was still commercial (thus relevant NW albums were still being cut on a regular basis)...

High by the Cure or Regret by New Order IMO the last great "new wave" songs released alongside the early grunge stuff that would wipe all other artists off alternative radio.
