I betcha there are more than a few of us here who at one time or another idolized a favorite musician and tried to dress like him or her.
When I was 12 I thought Simon LeBon's white jacket in "The Reflex" video looked really cool and convinced my Mom to buy me one just like it. I was happy as could be but soon realised that Simon LeBon was Simon LeBon whereas I was a dorky 12 year old who could never hope to possibly look presentable in a jacket like that.

I idolized the Go-Gos and dressed like them when I was 9-12. Then, at 13, I discovered Exene Cervenka from X and her awesome style of thrift-n-vintage chic.

I found a hat like Simon Lebon wore in the Hungry like The Wolf video, complete with pleated hat band and all. I wore that thing for about 6 months and then gave it away, replacing it with a grey fedora that I kept for years.

I idolized The Ramones, and various other American punk bands... I did dress just like them in high school, and still sort of dress that way I guess. I'm still a t-shirt, jeans, and fish heads (aka converse canvas sneaks) kind of guy.

I forgot to mention that at 17 I was heavily into late-70's British punk and would go to high school dressed very much like Johnny Rotten......except of course for my neat and short conservative haircut (Doh!). Damn those Mothers of ours!
