Now that the names of the bands and tracks were verified I found Seven Red Seven (Thanks!), but not Shades of Gray. It looks like Razormaid was the label back then and they are still around. They still sell everything they released (so they claim) but the only way to buy a disc is online and the purchase process is pretty funky. Sounds like that should be a new topic though.

MARS is now Indie 103.1 and it is much better than KROQ today. I pretty much live for it.
I think you can even stream it online at indie1031.fm, but I could be wrong.

Now does anyone remember when KNAC would broadcast cutting edge alternative music?

I remember that being the station where I first heard Love Vigilantes by New Order. So it was on the air broadcasting cutting edge stuff around the time Low Life was released.

I have a few old Goldenvoice flyers, most notably the 1st Love and Rockets L.A. shows that mention it's being brought to us by KNAC.

Ah... the times before KNAC stood for headbanging shaggy haired mullets.. Between KNAC, some really staticy 91X broadcasts that I could pick up if I mde a crude antennae out of clothes hangers and aluminum foil, and KXLU, I had a real nice alternative to KROQ which IMO never really ever wanted to take any big chances and stuck to playing New Wave past it's freshness date in late 84 just as The Smiths, JAMC, and R.E.M. were paving a road away from heavy synth..

If I recall, wasn't MARS FM sort of tied to the whole Acid House/Rave phenomena that was just starting in L.A.?

I think Indie has some really good specialty shows, where I've been exposed to some good music I don't think otherwise I would have discovered. But their regular rotation is a little predictable, to be honest. Granted it's not all Fall Out Boy, Hoobastank, Nickelback and all that other crap, but I still think they could mix in even more new stuff. But they do play a lot of New Order and Smiths.

I never miss "Check One Two" on Sunday nights for new local bands. I have found some really good ones that way like Monsters are Waiting, Shiny Toy Guns, and my new favorite Senior Recreation. Love it.

Yep... I do. For some reason I remember them playing Split Enz a lot.

KNAC was great. I remember them playing early Bangles, REM, Waterboys and Animal Nightlife. Then one night I tried to tune in and got this horrific sound! They went metal... I was so bummed.
