Why remix?

I've never understood the idea of remixing a song. Mostly in the industrial/ebm/electro genres, but even in the New Wave scene there is alot of remixing. I don't understand why anyone would want to put time and effort into reworking someone else's song when they could just go ahead and write their own.

This is not to be confused with and extended dance mix (ala Duran's "Night Versions" et al), but someone taking the unmixed tracks of a song and reworking it all. Wouldn't it be more creative to write your own new song?

Well, remixes are kind of a neccesity, and there's different kinds of remixes for different purposes.

These days, singles are often mixed differently (compressed all to hell) just for radio play. Also, they may be truncated to fit the format. These

I am a big fan of remixes, I have been exposed to a lot of new artists via remixes.

Worst remixes, by far, are included in [i]The Rest Of NewOrder[/i] compilation. Pretty much anything I've heard that was remixed in the 90s and to-day is a hacked up version done by some kid who probably wasn't even around to hear the original [B)]
