The Replacements are one of the best bands of all time (IMHO) and one of the more influental. I'm glad they are mentioned here (being a NEW WAVE board and all). Tim is one of the best major label debuts of all time.
Losing Bob was the beginning of the end and sadly it was just a matter of time until they splintered.
Pleased To Meet Me is as great as it is (aside form Paul's last batch of great, diverse songs) because Bob's parts were already established, demoed and rehearsed by the time he left and they recorded it.
Paul did his best Bob impressions on that record.
Don't Tell A Soul sounds hollow in comparison.
All Shook Down is wake of a great band. Great songs on it too!

I'm surprised how I keep going back to Don't Tell a Soul. Generally I'd be more likely to listen to earlier stuff like Sorry Ma, Let it Be and Tim but that album surprisingly keeps getting stronger to me with each listen. It didn't have that impact on me initially (hate to admit it but I start to lose interest in most groups after the first 5 or 6 albums - - there's always too much new blood to keep up with.)

Not sure why, but "Waitress in the Sky" is my favorite. But I'm partial to songs I too can actually play on guitar, anyway.

I also enjoy They Might Be Giants' take on the Mats ("Hi, We're the Replacements"). Simple funny song, if you know their history.

I consider myself "casual" friends of The Replacements. My band had opened for them, I've partied with 'em, I played in an Alice Cooper cover band with Chris and Tommy. They're good people and all that.

As much as I like most of their early records though, I have seen them probably at least a dozen times starting in '81 and I never saw them do a "good" show. I only saw the drunken, sloppy gigs. I know Bob could rock out, and his last band, Static Taxi opened for my band and his brilliance would show through. He was a really cool guitarist.
