That's a picture of the BMO (Bank of Montreal) tower in Toronto, as seen from one of the poorer areas of the city. Standard photographic juxtaposition really. I guess the band drew on local imagery for their covers. Their first lp, "Metro Music" also uses a map of Toronto on the the cover.

They probably still viewed themselves as a local band at the time they released this, and felt it would have a recognizability among locals buying the lp.

XTC's Go 2 is great! Wonderfully tongue-in-cheek.

The White album, though, I think was more about making a statement -- remember the Beatles had just come off Sgt. Pepper, and then you had Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine. I think they were being purposefully minimalistic. They were constantly reinventing the rules.


But PIL's album (or cassete, or CD) seemed contrived to me -- just marketing. Johnny Lydon has always come off a little phony to me -- as if he's trying to stay true to a "screw you" punk mentality that he never really possesed.

I agree with DayGloJo: "Fear of Music" at least had some raised relief texture (at least the vinyl version did); "Talking Heads '77", however, is definitely the dullest album cover ever. I used to wonder if it wasn't a mistake, or the result of a last-minute lawsuit or something.
