i always thought it was a comment on the way the middle class would work out a career path for their chinless offspring... not yet out of school, and already working on a white-collar management job in industry.

still bugs me years later that i bought the single when it came out, with picture sleeve but the sales-assistant didn't include the free children's games promo that came with the early copies [:(!]

I always thought it was sung from the perspective of "the man" and that Nigel was everyman, controlled every step of the way and too ignorant to know it.

I think that Nigel is the typical man that is controlled by the establishment and the mass media (although at that time media was not as massive a now) and doesn't know waht he wants.
That song is great... I was shocked when I first saw the video.

[/quote]I don't care what his deal is. The song sucks. Fingernails on a chalkboard are less cloying.

I must have bad taste or perhaps I'm just NWO's resident poseur with no ear for *real* New Wave music, because once again one of my favorite songs gets shot down. Oh well...

By the way, was it true that XTC sucked live back in the day and that Andy Partridge had stage fright, or is that all an urban legend?

Yes and no...
Stage fright? Yes... that's the reason XTC stopped touring in '82. Andy's crippling panic attacks had reached the point where it was either stop altogether or go completely mad.
Sucking live? No... though I admittedly can't say first hand (I have amassed quite a collection of live recordings and video footage - XTC is my favourite band after all), but from all accounts their live performances were astounding. During their tour with The Police they stole the show from headliners Sting and The Boys...

Sorry to hear about the exclusion of the 'Making Plans for Nigel' game board Kola, but it sounds like you just got the ordinary picture sleeve. The version that includes the game and playing pieces is the same picture sleeve, but it unfolds to reveal the game (I have it proudly framed and displayed right in front of me above the computer monitor) [:D]
