New Wave Outpost Forum

Hi.

I am new here and just stumbled across this neat little message board while doing a basic web search for new wave in particular, I checked the place out for about 45 minutes or so and must say I found a new home

Let me first introduce myself, I am 16 years old and simply love new wave music, what is the general age around here anyway? I sam sure much older as many of you got to live in the 80's .... oh well

Some of my favorite bands are:
Duran Duran, Devo, Depeche Mode, Missing Persons, B-Movie, Flying Lizards, The Fixx, New Order, Wall Of Voodoo, Our Daughters Wedding, Clan Of Xymox, Strawberry Switchblade, The Bolshoi, Cowboy Junkies, The Quick, Modern Talking, Simple Minds, Erasure, Alphaville, Baltimora, The Cramps, They Might Be Giants, etc.

I'll be sure to post around and I look forward to meeting a lot of you

As you might expect, most of the folks here are 35-45, but we do have younger New Wave fans hanging out here as well. If you're interested, there was an age poll a while back.

Wow! Welcome! Its nice to here someone so young thats into new wave! There are people of all ages here but most are late 30's early 40's. So we were out in the clubs during the great 80's. Have a good time and visit all the sections of the board. This section is for music related stuff. The nnnw section is for general talk about anything.

muzak, you've listed some great bands.

I'm genuinely curious - - how did someone your age get into new wave? When I was 16 I had very little interest in the music of 20+ years ago.

Regardless, it's the only music that matters. Welcome to the boards.

ha!! yes I am a Full House fan and one episode had little old ladies singing "Whip It" so I asked my dad were R.E.M. were? since in the show that is what they called it ..... well lol we spent like 5 hours looking for the song and ever since that day everything fell in place like a perfect puzzle

Yes, I agree. I'm 42 now, and was 16 in 1979 -- I had absolutely no interest in music from 1959. I just don't think there was much "cool" music from that era. Maybe Elvis, but I wasn't into him at all, neither most music from the 60's (all the girl bands, Do Wop, it just seemed so unsophisticated) unless you are talking the Beatles. And a lot of the 70's music isn't great -- though I remember listening to the radio in the 70's -- Queen's Killer Queen, Paul Simon's 50 ways to Leave your Lover, ELO was just amazing with Sweet Talking Woman, Springsteen - Born to Run, Styx - Pieces of Eight, Renegade. and of course Led Zeppelin.

THEN came... THE CARS and everything changed. And of course many, many awesome songs of the 80's that we all know and love (and some horrible ones too) but music really jumped ahead in the 80's. And for me hearing The Human League's Don't You Want Me and Soft Cell's Tainted Love just solidfied a love affair with synthpop and New Wave music that is unparalled. Most music of the 90's was just aweful compaired to the 80's and the 21st century is not looking all the bright either -- sure there are some bright spots, but the 80's was a special unique time.

And of course MTV started showing ton's of cool videos about 1981 -- I still remember watching Icehouse's We Can Get Together video and thinking this is just amazing -- I still love that song to this day. I wish there was a way to order custom dvd's of songs from the MTV archive of videos -- most of the stuff I love doesn't see the light of day.
