WLIR 107.1 soon to be no more

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that WLIR is going away (again). I heard them for the first time today on 107.1 while out east, and thought they were playing great stuff.

I love Retro-Active (formerly "New Wave") on Music Choice. It is the same everywhere that carries Music Choice.

Another good place to look is "Alternative History" on Rhapsody.

Since 92.7 went off, I've been listening to my MP3 player in the car. It's sad that radio has become this awful.

I guess satellite radio may be a little better, with the "First Wave" channel on Sirius.

I was raised on 92.7 WLIR. In that time it's been WLIR (1970 - 1987), WDRE (1987 - 1994), The Underground (1994 - 1995), WDRE (1995 - 1999) and back to WLIR in the late 90's. I thought the station folded till
about six months ago came across a history of WLIR on line. I tuned in
only to hear more static than song. So that was that. I too have tuned in if I'm venturing out East but to no avail. Meaning they can't attain any substantial listenership because their signal is too weak. I've seen the decline in that stations programming anyway. Morrissey could have had released the worst song ever and he'd still get the "screamer/shriek of the week" as opposed to any NEW band with a superior song because of who he was. They stopped supporting new alt. bands in the early 80's. Blur were one of the best, most underplayed
bands on WLIR because of "Alt" groups like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Please.

Retro-active is currently playing "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper. Enough said. Somebody posted that this station plays The New York Dolls and
The Soft Boys? Never been that lucky with this. I don't mind the facelessness of the programming and the somtimes correct "facts or industry notes" (as laughable as it is). But usually there's no surprises here. They seem to play the same trite "new wave" singles
by uninspired lots like The Fixx, Naked Eyes or Bannannarama.
Heard Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam And The Ants not too long ago on here. That still somehow sounds fresh.

Shame about WLIR (ever sadder that no one was able to get it) but
they've been in the toilet for quite some time.
It WAS once great but proved not to be by 1993 or so.

Maybe the difference I hear in retroactive is that I tend to listen later at night on the weekends, so maybe they're looser with the playlist then.

I hear you loud and clear Trousers. The last few years of LIR I barely listened to it. But at least it was better than nothing.

I've posted this elswhere but it seems apropo as a followup.

IMO, the only (short lived) WLIR segment (about 5-7 years back) that gave the station a discernable pulse was 'WLIR After Dark'.

It was during that time that I heard some of the most energetic and vibrant club music reminiscent of days long since past.

What a shame that the TMO programming wonks scaled back and eventually yanked Andre & co's most listenable broadcast segment.[V]

No, you're not. I never listen to the '80s channel. Unfortunately, Retro-Active plays three Wham! songs and two Greg Kihn tracks. I don't care anymore that XB is back. I'll never have to sit through Taco again,
and the Pale Fountains and Care are always playing.
