80's movie soundtrack changes

[Stuck In The Eighties]

In the movie, "Some Kind of Wonderful", I've heard the Rolling Stones version of "Amanda Jones", while on the dvd I own, the Stones' version has been replaced by a version by March Violets.

Thats how it is on the ST too. I actually dig the March Violets alot, b/c of that movie, so I don't care that they did a cover of the song, it got me to listen to their music and I became a fan.

In the 80's version of Cat People, Ed Begley Jr. was clearly singing "What's New Pussycat" before he had to deal with an irate kitty. When I got the DVD, he changed the song to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". The change of song took away from the comedic effect. Granted, I have an old copy of the DVD, and don't know if the original soundtrack was replaced.

Here's what I've been able to figure out:
The first vinyl released originally released on Roadshow Records in 1983. Problems with licencing made this record illegal to release so all copies were recalled. It had been pressed and sent to stores, but the stores were told to return the album because not all licensing had been cleared.

Then another company, Avatar Records (an imprint of CBS) released a version and has a track listing of:

This one actually hit the shelves but was either pulled or went out of print almost immediately.

It wasn't until Rhino did the 2 cds "featuring music from the movie Valley Girl" that anything resembling an official soundtrack was released.

I've got a sealed copy of the first one, and had a cassette of the second one. I might still have the tape in a box somewhere in the basement.

You know...I never gave this much thought nor did I ever notice the changes (I haven't watched any "soundtrack" movies in soooooooo long). I would have thought that, once licensed, always licensed. Obviously not.
This was a pretty good topic.



We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.
