New Order Questions? Blir? Marvy?

How were the tracks selected for the "Fans" disc in the Retro box set? Did they have an online vote?

How did not a single version of "Thieves Like Us" make it's way onto Retro?

It was picked by music biographer and author John McCready. Also a big fan of New Order obviously. I saw a review that said that "being a New Order fan is also about loving the dark side, and McCready is 100 per cent that style of fan." So Disc 2 of Retro has a bunch of non-single album cuts that tend to be among those chiller fan favorite types. Of course, if you polled ten different fans, you'd get ten diff playlists - this wasn't a poll however.

Who is the woman in the band, and what does she do? And who writes their music/lyrics...one person in particular?
Anyone know? Is there a website that tells that?

Gillian Gilbert. Long time girlfriend of Steven Morris, New Order's drummer, she joined the band when they reinvented themselves after Ian Curtis' sad demise. Gillian has taken on guitar and keyboard duties both in the studio and on tour and even though she has such an angelic voice of sweetness and delicacy her only vocal contribution has been to Avalanche, Republic's closing note of poignancy. Although no formal statement has been made (true to New Order style) and after twenty years of being in the band, Gillian has apparently taken a break at least for the time being due to family commitments. Check out the Other Two, a side project she did with her husband Steven which yielded two albums of sparkly dance pop loveliness.

To the best of my knowledge, New Order take collective credit for song writing although more specifically I've read in several interviews that it's Bernard Sumner who writes the lyrics.
